Hi,
I can jump pretty well out in the surf and off little bits of chop, but would like to know the step by step technique for doing insane-big jumps without the assistance of a nicely shaped section of water.
for example:
-How sheeted in should I be while redirecting?
-Should I crank the bar the whole way in once I feel the boost coming through?
-People talk about 'loading the lines up' - does this mean flying the kite to 11oclock and leaning back?
-When is the best moment to fly the kite back the other way again so that you don't go under it and make the strings floppy?
-What should I be doing while airborne in terms of sheeting in and sheeting out and when?
-How much forward speed should I have when I flick the kite?
(im pretty sure i'll figure out the answers to these eventually by trial and error, but any tips greatly appreciated)
I seem to have a problem of late, whenever i jump, my board seems to swing up in front of me as i maintain my balance in the air...
the only thing i can imagine is that i'm sending the kite too far back... ? Would this be it?
i really want to try and get a tail grab going, but as soon as i'm airborne, i find my legs are to the front of me, not behind me, and by the time i swing them back, it's time for landing..
any ideas?
Yer you guys keep asking more questions so i dont look like the silly one asking them . like i get going shooting kite too 11 then i edge as hard as can then sheet in kite goung to 12 and nothing all i seem to do is take off that is not in air but down wind . I know i should have tryed harder to get too that display or course that run last weekend at marochydore too get some help . Hope they have another one soon it would help all us out if we attended them .
thank you kitehard ther should be more people like you out there in our sport . iam by the sound of it trying too hard starting my kite from around 9 or 3 so will go out and give what you said a go .
Rhinoman you had too do it too at some stage give us kooks a far go you where a kook too and everyone knows it too .
No, if you were on starboard tack you would need to start with the kite at 1 - same height still, different side of the clock.
While we're on the topic of jumping, I'm having trouble with getting off the water without using my kite. I can do backrolls if I take off over a bit of chop, but as soon as I try it on flat water I just rotate, no pop. Would love some advice on how to pop nicely - I've been trying just bunny hops without the rotation to improve, but I find I either just come to a complete stop or my board skids along the top of the water. I can't seem to get a feel for a good time to release the edge, any words of wisdom?
Hi CJ12,
Keep your bar sheeted in from take off all the way through the back roll. You're most likely letting go of the bar pressure as you initiate the roll.
Maybe try riding a little faster as the roll is initiated from the upwind carve and turning of the head to look over your front shoulder, speed will help you project yourself further to windward giving more load on the lines and subsequently more height/pop.
Give it a whirl.
