Allot of guys I see going Backside seem to struggle to really project their turns vertical into the steep part of the wave and get that perfectly timed smash. Alright so I have been down the beach allot so I have had time to think about this topic....There is no right and wrong coz its all fun...but if you want to do multiple backhand roosters stay tuned so here goes
Problems first
1. Going to fast missing the section and top turning the shoulder of the wave...which leeds to kite cutbacks all day and they don't really set your hair on fire.
2.Not bottom turning long enough- More on this in minute.
3. Letting the Kite pull you down the line during the top turn/ Reo.
4. Drawing the wrong lines on the wave (WTF U say?)
With kiting the power and speed is addictive and its natural to become dependant on the kite for this instead working on surfing technique. SO there is certainly a balance of using the kite for obvious advantages and being able to switch it off to get some clean power hacks drawn. I wanted to focus on backside first as I personally think Backside is more technical than frontside.
2.Bottom Turning- This video is short and to the point watch first then after.
nice analysis. I am sure there are plenty of people that will benefit from your hard work putting this up. Good one!
That was very informative. Thanks for taking the time. Can you do forehand if you've got the time. Much appreciated ![]()
I think your first and only problem is going backside, It may seem more technical but IMO it never feels like your carving a wave to its full potential. I have learned to go against my normal natural stance and worked on going goofy, which is more suitable for Perth wind and wave direction. to me it just flows better when your facing the wave
Yeah great article. I would appreciate a front side version as well as am basically making it up as I go along. An article on frontside aerials would be good too. Can sometime get in the air off the lip but I don't come down too good haha.

Hi Andre,
Your avatar shows a kiter riding frontside left ?
Is that you in the pic ?

Buzz me down and ask Dave, there's a few variations regarding strapped/less, hooked/un,
my brain hurts from trying to translate this into my goofy backhand turns in Perth slop..
..guy in the pic is riding goofy doing back hand turn (i think) and the rest is written from the natural stance perspective?

Cool! Thanks Nick will catch you at the beach sometime.
Kite position depends a lot on the wind direction and strength, for me it's always changing. Best thing you can do is kite more
