The picture tells a thousand words, Lord Howe is an awesome kiting location, I am speak from personal experience as I live here & kite every opportunity.
It seems the cats out of the bag, as quite a few kiters have booked to come visit July & August. Wind has started already kiting 5 days in the last week between 18 & 30 kts. Water temp around 22c & crystal clear. Plenty of good packages on offer at the moment. Need any more info just message me.
I'm of to Mauritius mid June with Kitethrills, both locations seem to have a lot of similarities. ![]()
whats the best time of the year to come over?
June till end of September, July August the best months!
I went over in January this year and it blew over 20knots for 5 days straight. Swell was big with some flat water behind reef. I had Easterlies as it was Summer which meant the other side of the island was working (not the lagoon side), although there is potential for offshore kiting in the lagoon / reef break with a support boat. (I think the locals do it occasionally). The eastern side has a bunch of surf beaches with flat area behind reefs. I rate Lord Howe as possibly one of the best kite locations in the world, with heaps of other things to do for non-kiters. When I went I didn't even go over for a kite trip, but brought the 9 just in case and scored some awesome sessions.

Hey Dave, what's it like to moor a boat (cat) in the lagoon at this ^ time of year ?
There are a number of visitor moorings at three locations in the lagoon. North Passage, South Passage & Comets Hole. They are well maintained. With onshore winds they can be rolly with a big swell & high tide. Much more comfortable in a cat. I assume your draft is minimal so you would have the option of moving from one mooring area to another if the wind shifted. You would need a tender to get to shore. Hope this helps.![]()
Thanks dave, was looking at going in summer but for kiting... late winter looks the go
Give us the heads up if you decide to sail over, only too happy to introduce you to the local scene!
Ive been wanting to go there for ages but the luggage allowance puts me off...last November I checked... was a max of 14kg and excess didn't exist or was crazy $
^^^ sounds like the flight to lady elliot (max 14kgs). But you can post gear over a couple of days before you go and meet up with it there , That is for lady elliot any ways . Worth looking into .

A few baggage tips - There is a 14kg per bag outward limit from Sydney and Brisbane, and you are allowed a carry on up 7kg, and you can book an extra 14kg bag. The Extra 14kg bag may not travel on the same flight as you, but could arrive the next day and would be delivered to your accommodation on Lord Howe.
Return flights are not an issue because all the Qantas staff at Lord Howe are local residents and they let that sort of thing slip, they do not want to hassle their tourists.
The way I would get around the issue is to use one of those bags that splits in two, that way you could have 28kg of booked in luggage, which is up too 4 kites, your board and wet suit etc. I would carry the bag to the airport clipped together as one bag, when I get to the check in counter I split it into two.
Fit as much in your carry on bag, in an airline approved carry
on backpack. They do not normally weight your carry on. The check in person will warn you that your extra bag might not come on the same flight, but normally does. The only time extra bags will not come on the same flight is if the flight is completely full, and at this time of the year the flights are not often full.
Book the extra 14kg bag online the price at the airport is double, I'm fairly sure it is only $20 online.
If you need any other help let me know, you probably will not need big kites as the winds in winter tend to be 20-30 knots.
If you want to ship stuff prior, send it in a 5kg express post bag, which is shipped by air and get there quite quickly usually within 24-48 hrs from Brisbane, can take an extra day from Sydney for some reason. Use an Express Post bag not a box as it is cheaper.
Wo Tasmania, bit cheaper if your in vic like me...Decisions decisions....
Long walk into there, doubt you will be doing it with your gear!
But there are a lot of other nice places around that area anyway
Lord howe will be warmer ![]()

Water temp here at Lord Howe is 22c, we have coral in the lagoon, so not cold for long, gets down to about 19c with a bit of wind chill! Only use a steamer.![]()
Hi. Having trouble deciding.... I travelled to Lord Howe this year , first week of August with a group of mates for a kitesurfing week. We had an awesome week. Kited 5 days out of seven. Average winds were 15-20knots, coming cross-onshore from both ends of the lagoon. I think this was light for this time of the year - often 20-30 knots Southwesters blowing ( I had a week of 20-30knots southwesters in September a couple of years ago). Inside the lagoon, there is flatwater kiting for miles. Water depth is generally good until you get close to the fringing reef. On the reef there are a couple of good reef passes which work for surf kiting a couple of hours either side of high tide. Dave and the local kiters are very friendly, and will let you know the spots . I would really recommend the kiting package put together (Oxley Travel) - good value, and invaluable help including dropoffs at the launch spots, and boat support from Dave and others. We also had a fantastic trip out to Balls Pyramid fishing for king fish with Greenback, which I would highly recommend - caught about 30 or so kingfish and trevally. Had amazing sashimi, sushi, fish burgers all week. What kites to bring - I'd bring a 7 or 8 and a 10. This trip I kited mainly on my 10m (I'm about 90kg and ride a surfboard). Last trip I kited almost entirely on my 8m and a twintip. We spent 2 mornings mucking around on 16m and 17m kites early in the week this trip, but you might be better off fishing if its that light. Regarding luggage - pack your main kite and board etc in your primary luggage bag, and bring a second bag (up to 14kg) with your second kite and everything else. We all managed to get our main bag/board etc over on the same plane. Having kited many different spots around the world including maui, vietnam, mauritius, and northern NSW, this is one of my favorites, and a must do if you live in OZ. Cheers!
What's the climate like for non kiters in June / July - cold ? I'm trying to plan a holiday for 2014 and Lord Howe came up as a suggestion. My wife has suggested Fiji or somewhere warm...
From WA I'd be hitting up Mauritius or Reunion Island.
With respect to Lord Howe, Seabreeze member "Salt" has just been over there on an instruction trip with Kite Republic. He had a wicked time by all accounts.
