You know the saying about fishing?

A fisherman is a jerk on one end of the line waiting for a jerk on the other. Well today, I was that jerk on the other end of the line.

Went out at Palm beach, gybed on a wave and I suddenly find a fishing line over my shoulder and left arm. A second later and the hook dug it way into my left wrist (as I'm kiting out to sea on a NE). I didn't feel much, just see my skin stretch unnaturally far. I let go of my bar, trying to prevent more tension in the line, and try to steer the kite towards the beach. But I fell off the board and my body dragging through the water raised the stakes, so I tried biting the line, dropping the kite in the process. I thought if the flesh and skin in my wrist let go, that hook is in my mouth, so I better get this right... Managed to bite through the line, swim to shore, drag kite out of waves. Then the inevitable: pulling the hook out... Surprised myself in that t didn't hurt at all (adrenaline?). Returned the hook to the fisherman who was dumbstruck by it all. He said he cast his line out thinking it wouldn't come near me, but the wind swooped it over my kite lines and then down to my wrist.

(To be clear: I didn't kite through a fishos lines; he cast his line over me)

Anyway, it bled a bit and feels a bit funny now, but I was back out 5min later.

... Wow, could have been worse dude!

I had something similar happen to me only not as bad as yours. I was poleboarding and cruising along I went downwind of a fishing boat roughly 100m upwind of me. I heard a wierd buzzing noise, hmmm whats that I think???? I look down and I see a 5mm rope running across the mast base.
WTF I think.

Then it dawned on me, its a fishing line with a lure at the end. In a heat beat I dropped the sail, sit down on the board and furiously tried to pull the lure faster then the boat was driving away from me. Dink dink dink the lure flicks up and I threw it upwind of me,,,, damn,,, lucky me,,, it was a f'ing huge spoon lure with a massive hook. Had that f'ing thing caught on me or the gear I surely been dragged along,,,, this thing was designed to catch f'ing big fish.

cheers,

Robbie

Pretty lucky! When i was growing up i generally fished with two of my mates at least once a day and one day one of them cast a lure and on the way out, a treble got stuck in my hand. Being in year 7 mum took me to docs with my mates in tow...

The very next day at the same place (south wall, hillarys) my mate casts a lure and it hits my other mate in the back of the head and got badly stuck. Off we go to docs and doc is old mate from the day before

Since then we've crushed barbs on our lures

This hook was not too big, thank f-ck. Not a lure on it, just the hook, about an inch long.

So in short, you were in the water, a fisherman threw a line and you bit?

Lucky it was catch and release!

Tetanus is 100% fine for te first 5 years and then recommended to get a booster. For te next 5 if u get scratched or something. After 10 completely useless.

Tetanus is good for 10 years. Glad you sorted that out. I nearly got taken out last year by a fisherman, but I would say it was more my fault. He was there first way down the line and I was just riding further and further down. On this pass I felt the lines around my body and I knew straight away what was on the other end. I pulled hard and luckily the line snapped, but the dude was none too happy. I went in and apologized and he started to swear a bit because it was a new lure. I asked him how much it cost and I would buy him a new one, but he declined the offer and loosened up a bit.
I now stay as clear as long as they don't park themselves right in front of our spot in 20 knot winds when it is very clear that there are other kites there to begin with.

Funnily enough just two days ago I was ready to launch kite and felt a sharp pain in my left calf and a pull on my right foot.I had walked through some dick heads old snapped of fishing line.the line was in between my toes and every time I moved, even an inch, made the plastic lure dig in deeper.Any how pulled it out ( ouch ) and had a good session.
When I came back in, Tetanus was on my mind, so called sis in law ( nurse ) she told me to go get booster shot straight away ( so I did ).
She later says that a builder had a small piece of wire in his finger ( which he removed ) diddnt get tetanus shot or had one for 25 yrs and within 3 days was in hospital sick as.
He later was flown to Sydney where his condition deteriorated to the point where he was on life support , organs were shutting down.
He pulled through but is still in the poo from it.....any way GET A TETANUS SHOT.

Dutchy, that sucks (figuratively).

I doubt I would have thought about it at the time, but, did you have line cutters on you?

Yeah I have a hook knife / line cutter on my harness (and have had to use it before), but it all happened too fast and the instinct was just to grab hold of the line before it ripped flesh - and bite through the line. I think if I'd taken 10seconds longer to grab my line cutter, the hook would have done a lot more damage.

I was also lucky that I turned my kite back towards the beach first, immediately, before dropping everything to try to bite the line. My kite dropped into the sink but at least it was dragging me towards shore.
