Gusting by the second from 25 to 30+ in Perth today. For all those asking "what kite" I suggest sitting back today and watching. It gets pretty obvious which brands and models run smooth in these conditions.
The smoother they travel today = the smoother they travel on regular days. ![]()

Got out of the water 2 hours ago - 10meter Ozone Catalyst
I was fully trimmed/depowered on a 7m reo today and was really surprised how well it handled the gusts and was still stable during turns (85kgs on a standard sb). Only a quick session though as I felt I was dicing with danger a little bit at my skill level.
Took my mates 8m Catalyst down to pinaroo point but that was too much for my skill level (still cant get the upwind edge going consistently in the chop there with this wind).
But plenty of fun sitting on the beach watching the guys get big air
We got hit pretty hard out on the water today in Vic. 20 up to 55. Out on an 8m pivot. It was a bit up and down all arvo but that spike hit hard.
Had a late arvo session at a little spot i came across a few weeks ago
30 to 40 knts , dogs ears were turned inside out huddled under a foot of sand
Gave me a look to say, let's get the f...k out of here
Some great ramps to launch and bits of waves to slash the crap out of,
Ride safe
On my 7 today, guess it was a little gusty but nothing that wasn't still fun. Looked like it was in the high 20's around Leighton today.
Bought my 7 for days like this, did see a few people whose kites looked like a bit of a handful.
But I do agree you should respect the limits of your kites and skills, whatever they may be.

I've got the same kite, i reckon i would of been struggling. You must be a big unit to hold that down?
6m Neo, cracking afternoon. Gusting 36 knots at Brighton at 5.30pm, according to a passing windsurfer's wind meter.
I was at leighton too today. I went down hoping to test out a 10m race kite, but I'm glad I launched my 7! Felt a little over powered at times when going flat out and it would gust.
mmmmh! I like a good 25-35 knot wind. 8m cat does a good job at boostage and riding the waves. But I'm keen to get myself a 7 edge for sillier boosting in these conditions. Its taking a while for one to pop up second hand in my price range.
Between 25 to 35 knots we use 6m or 5m kites in The Netherlands in order to ride the waves - and we do have strong currents !
Was cranking that's for sure, not many out, sorts the men from the boys
What a seriously wanky machoistic statement to make. But then again... meh... that is WA
Hmm. . . No, I don't think it sorts the men from the boys. . . .

I agree with Austin. A good 35 knots certainly does sort the men from the boys!!!......
Thins the crowd dramatically. You can tell the hardcore crew by the look in their eyes on those days. The crazy buggars have that look in their eye of excitement, adrenaline "I gota get out there NOW" look. The others look like a deer in the headlights. You can see the fear in the whites of their eyes!.
But with high depower small kites these days i'm seeing more normal blokes hitting conditions up to 35 knots.
Want to thin the crowd down to the silliest of the hardcore farkers then look for 40+ knots. Only a select few experieneced maniacs will take that on...
For the rare occasion in Perth it's 30+ are you better off with a smaller kite or will a far smaller board help take some power out?

She's here waiting, awsome condition, come with frequent flyer points, it's accumulated a heap during the last week,

Just use a smaller kite. On a twin tip in 30kts. I'd change between a 9 and 7.
When it's 30kts- it can gust 35, so smaller is safer. I think just use the board you normally ride as you will be most comfortable on/confident.
