Dear Friends

Please comment on this updated draft of the guidelines for Kitesurfing at Scarborough (including beaches from City Beach to Trigg Beach).

Deadline is Sunday 30.1.11. Scarborough Kiters already joined up will be emailed directly. To join, please PM me with your email address.

A BBQ is planned for the Scarborough Beach User's Group on 5.2.11 (see www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/General/Scarborough-Kiters-Inaugural-BBQ-WA/) and leaflets of these guidelines will be distributed there or shortly thereafter.

Thank you for your feedback.
Shan (Coordinator).

Guidelines for Kitesurfing at Scarborough (including beaches from City Beach to Trigg Beach)

Be aware that Brighton and Contacio's Beaches (Scarborough) are Advanced Kiter locations. They have strong currents, rips and dumping surf.

These guidelines are location specific emphasis and must be read in conjunction with the full WAKSA guidelines at www.waksa.com (or overleaf).

Please assist in approaching and informing other kiters who are not adhering to these guidelines.

1. Stay away from surf lifesaving flags; keep at least 50m upwind and downwind and stay at least 200m out to sea. Stay away from swimmers.

2. Stay away from the surf club area when Lifesavers are training, and on busy days when swimmers spill out from between the flags.

3. Don't launch and land on any grassed area, and don't walk up or down the path with your kite in the air.

4. Do not kite between the groynes at City Beach and stay out of the surf club area at Floreat (marked by white buoys) if the flags are up.

5. City Beach only launch area is south of the groyne. Please ensure you are sufficiently upwind to safely clear the groyne and lifeguard tower.

6. Floreat only launch area is to the north of the surf club.

NB: Both the above launch locations have carparks, grassed areas and wide access to the beach for carrying kites. Keep clear of other beach users when setting up.

Those who frequent this forum know the rules.

It's the ones who don't who are oblivious.

On every downwinder I see someone kiting in the bay at City's.

At every Scarbs/Brighton session I see someone inbetween the flags or fanging through the swimmers.

ok the floreat launch area does NOT have a grassed area. the grass is only on the south side of the club... just thought i might add that point.

edit: not that it matters.

Thanks Bene. The plan was when we (on this forum) agree on the guidelines, they be published (WAKSA will sort) and distributed (we will sort). We will have something to educate those perpetrators (and there hopefully will be less and less of them!)

Perhaps we should make them waterproof so we can chase people down and slap one on 'em?

In case you missed it - get down for a free snag and donate your 2c to the discussion before 31-01 and have a chin-wag whilst your there.

Maybe the smell of freshly charred offal will attract some of the 'less permenant kiters' frequenting ther area?

Can't hurt to impart some local knowledge and dos/don't when handing over a snag in a blanky (hold onto it tightly till the sermon is finished tho.)

Another rule:
If someone is trying to boost over your strings please keep your kite low to avoid tangles

dont stand on the beach chatting (or whatever) with your kite out over the water

applies anywhere along the downwinder stretch, or anywhere else really...

Thanks for this. The intentions for the Scarb and surrounds guidelines were to be specific and with emphasis. This may be good for the WAKSA general guidelines since it will apply to all beaches - I will forward. Cheers, Shan.

Bump. Finalising tonight. No major changes - so I guess we are pretty good!

Hopefully these will be handed out widely and there will be interaction whenever it is needed.

Cheers for reading people!
