Hey guys - I'm off to a wedding in Auckland next week - Browns Bay (I bet it's nothing like Byron Bay!) I think. I've heard there's some good spots over there.
Anyone know any good pubs over there as I know them Kiwis only drink that girly stuff!
Cheers, Dan
Was hanging out with some Kiwi's on the cook islands that kited at point chev, no idea what it's like though.
Hi there bro,
I've just moved back to Auckland and am getting my head around the spots. There is heaps of kiting here but it can require a bit of driving.
If its westerly Pt Chev is really good. Nice clean wind, close to the city and a big crew. You'll need a high to mid tide. If you've got more time Muriwai Beach (40 mins from city) is epic, especially for waves. There's a cool little brewery out there called Halertau.
Brown's Bay is on the east coast and there are heaps of spots. Try Orewa, Takapuna and Narrow Neck. All are close to Brown's Bay.
Heaps better beer than Qld mate, and don't try to bring in any Bundy, it's not allowed through customs. haha have a great trip.
Don't go to Pt Chev, it's called Pt Shred by the locals because of all the oysters. (you'll need booties to kite there)
Shakespeare is good in a southerly (SW to SE), but a bit of a hike. Orewa for Easterlies and Muriwai/West coast for a westerly and some battering waves. (You won't find clean waves on the west coast, but a fun playground with flat water sections between the breaking waves)
Auckland itself is gusty and has a lot of oyster shells, but I've had some great fun at Shoal Bay in a S-Wester at low tide (the predominant wind direction)
Be aware that many kite spots are tide dependant, it needs to be low tide to kite at Muriwai, Shoal Bay, Pt Chev and it's best to kite at low tide at Orewa and Shakespeare.
There's other spots too, but if you can take a day to drive down to Raglan you won't regret it :)
