Hey,
I'm planning a trip to GC/Brisbane later this year (nov, dec or jan) for 4 weeks. Want to get as much good winds as possible and hopefully hit some nice flat water spots. I'm a freestyle junkie so consistent winds and not too crowded would be nice..
I've only been surfing in GC and never been kiting there, so not sure about the winds and spots and all..
How's the wind and GC spots around that time of year?
If the winds are unstable I should probably go somewhere else but I'd like to stay close to Brisbane since I've got friends I'd like to visit and stuff..![]()
Wind is impossible to judge, could be ok, could be non-existent. There aren't too many flat water spots, but on GC you could go to broadwater... or kite chop city in Brisbane at Sandgate and Wellington point and stuff.
I am not a local but holiday up that way a lot. I mainly ride in the waves, but I have noticed some decent flat water on the inlet at currumbin, it looked better than the broadwater( chop city). There are always a few freestylers out when I have been there.
On the wind question I have always found that october/november is way more consistant for ne winds than dec/jan. Less tourists then too.
There is also a cable to hit in south brissie(1 hour drive) if windless.

I'm pretty sure you're not technically meant to kite in there and you can get a fine for doing so. Obviously I don't care but I'm just putting it out there.

Excellent advice bennie, ur spot on! Currumbin really works well in n or ne and preferably on an outgoing tide. There used to be a sweet little flat lagoon that formed on the northern beach side of the rock wall when the tide went out, but the sandbar has dissapeared.
I'm not sure about the fine for kiting the inlet? I have kited there for the last few years and did read about a fine somewhere on the internet.....but have never heard of it being enforced. I don't think ur allowed to swim in the river inlet, but people still do so..... It'll all be good 'til it gets out of control ![]()
Spot on about the cable park at Carbrook too...... if ur into wakestyle it has some pretty decent jumps and sh!t
agree with Bennie on the timing but you could do worse. Zillions of spots. Look up a kiteschool, follow. ask around wen you're there, google map, you can find flat water spots not too choppy avail if you use you noggin.
.
Thanks for your replies.
I'm thinking that most places will be crowded during xmas so it would probably be best to go from end nov (23/11) and leave before xmas (22/12).
I know it's hard to say, but is it usually windy during this period?
Seems like most people recommend Perth/WA in december but I'd really like to go to stay around Brisbane..
How's the shark situation?
And how are the nearby cable parks? (cableski logan, gowake sunshinecoast)
recommendations on cheap places to stay, close to the kite spots would be great as well =)

hm, ye, thats great, thanks...
A serious answer would be even better though =)
Another thing I was wondering, when the winds up in nov-dec, how windy is it? I mean, do you guys normally ride 12m kites or small kites? (for an average guy, 80 kilos)
Golden beach inlet Caloundra, Cotton tree Maroochydore actually did Red beach Bribie Island 2wks ago 22knot winds don't know why everyone keeps sooking about sharks in that area spent 2 1/2hrs hrs there couple of laps body dragging thanks to big wipeouts and out of the four of us not one saw or got hit by shark lol p.s. most common kites used are 10 12 and 17 average winds this year were around 18 knots I'm 88 kg on 139 tt and my 12 is most used anywhere from 17 to 30 knots
