im sure this has been covered before but can't find the tread - I'm flying Melb to Cairns and want to take my 5'8" SB and reading through Qantas additional baggage stuff says SB may have to be sent as freight ?. So what is the go - pre purchase an additional "bag" to cover the board ? What are people's experiences travelling with a SB ?

Jetstar charged me additional luggage piece $40...on return trip I packed surfboard bag with more stuff, so it was my only luggage piece into the luggage hold, and then carried on my kites and gear in kite bag.
Did this last week!

I went from Melbourne to Byron direct (Qantas) with a 5'8" board and didn't pay any extra and it was the only thing that arrived both times when my luggage didn't.
