OK - i posted this awready on the downwinder thread but it's probably better here rather than hijacking that thread.

I have noticed a few blokes setting up and launching STH of the Floreat groin (between the City Beah and Floreat groins but near the northerm Floreat groin) . Now I could be wrong here but I have always been under the impression this was a definate no-no (from the council and/or lifesavers?)

Anybody know the offical deal there?

Also I was amazed to see a Euro guy walk down from the Floreat kids playground and set up his rig 2 metres from the main walkway as little 5 yr olds ran past a few feet away!? If you know the set up of Floreat kids beach (not City Beach - but where the elevated playground/clubhouse/cafe is at Floreat) you'd know that is a dang fool place to rig.

Now I had a chat to the guy and it turns out he has been setting up on Floreat kids beach for a year according to him. Er..ok.. I suggested this was a definate no-go (as a couple more kids ran down the walkway a few metres from us) and that he would be wiser to at least go upwind 20 metres (or preferably more). He was very reluctant but did so in the end. It was all civil but I'd be 90% sure he will be too kn lazy to walk 20m next time and he will rig right next to the walkway again.

The chances of a kid running down the sloping main walkway and turning left at the end - straight into his lines/set-up as he went to lauch was pretty bloody high. Add to that the fact when launching from that posi you can't see the kids coming down the walkway (and they can't see you about to hit the go button) and that is a disaster waiting to happen.

Honestly, it should have been completely obvious, but when it's windy the blinkers go on a serious tunnel vision occurs for some guys.

It bakes my cookies that there is massive amounts of open beach either side of Floreat kids beack - and pizz easy access also, so why FFS would you rig 2 m from the walkway with kids screaming past a couple of feet from your kite???[}:)]

If you see anyone rigging immediatly in front of the Floreat kids beach, and especially next to the sloping walkway, word them nicely to expend a few kilojules in pursuit of a safer/better posi to launch.

Should this thread be in
All Forums > Kitesurfing > Western Australia / WAKSA ?

Looks like WA thread is slowly dying...

Anyways, I'm with you! Will be there tomorrow for a company event, if I'll see him, will have a chat as well.

dont forget to keep an eye on the euros camping (in big red bus) at floreat groin, or anyone for that matter, rigging up lines or launching/landing on the grassed area in front of the car park.

I have had a word to the euros and they seemed all cool about it but Ive heard someone has been landing here since? I havent seen anyone doing this for a while...since last season, but these guys may have started a trend that needs to be stopped.

pumping up kites on the grass is ok, but you then need to move down to the beach to rig up lines and launch/land.

thanks

Er.. you're right. Am reluctant to spam 3 differant forums tho.

Default - spot on about the habit of landing/launching on the grass. That is a d!ck trick and I've only seen that done maybe 3-4 times in 5 years.

I know it must look tempting to launch/land on the grass, but Tueros, if you've been worded and continue, then you are running the risk of pizzing off the lion's share of local kiters. [}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)]

If the campers continue landing/launching on the grass then maybe the council needs to be alerted to their (illegal) camping prescence at Flozzer?

As part of WAKSA’s ongoing liaison with various local government authorities, we recently met with the Head Ranger and Director of Community Development at the Town of Cambridge to discuss kite surfing issues.

The Cambridge representatives indicated that the Town has commenced a risk assessment process for all parks and reserves – which includes City Beach and Floreat.

The Town of Cambridge has sought our assistance in advising kiters that launching and landing at the Floreat groyne is restricted whilst the risk management process is underway, and that kiting should not take place between the City Beach & Floreat groynes.

Kiters are advised to launch/land south of the City Beach (that is, the southern groyne with the look out tower) or north of Floreat Surf Club. A kite exclusion zone exists between the two groynes. We have been advised by the Head Ranger that pending a successful risk assessment period (for another 9 months), we will get access to the Floreat groyne once more. A ‘successful’ risk management period will be one that means no complaints about kiters or incidents involving kiters at City Beach/Floreat groyne.

This will obviously have an impact on the Floreat/Brighton down winder and access to some of the best waves in Perth. For the remainder of this season, we would encourage crew doing this downwinder to launch near the kiosk at the southern groyne, or to launch north of the Floreat Surf Club.

WAKSA appreciates that this will not be very popular and encourage any City Beach/Brighton downwinder crew to contact us via waksa@waksa.org.au.

What a joke!!
So the waves at the northern groin are only available now
For people doing downwinders , if want to session there you have to drive up to the southern groin launch kite down then tack back up to land
