Ok guys, I know the Fiji topic has been flogged to death, and I have spent an hour or 2 reading old posts...but here's my dilema.
Going on a family holiday and heading to Malolo Island Resort (NW tip of Malolo Island) late September, after spending a week at Cardrona NZ in the snow.
Murphy would state, that if I dont take my kiting gear conditions will be great.
So the plan is to cart my gear to NZ, maybe get a snow kite in if conditions are right, then hopefully (finger crossed) get some kiting in while in Fiji. Its more of a family resort than windsports oriented (the wife booked it!
)
- Has anyone stayed / kited from Malolo Island Resort? (Beach looks sandy, not coral, I have contacted the resort and the manager says it is ok to kite from the resort beach)
- I believe the trades blow E to SE........East wont work in this location, as it would be offshore and on the leeward side of the island. SE may work as the resort beach runs in a SE direction.
- What is the likely wind direction / strength end of September?
I have a 12m and a 17m Zephyr, from what I can work out I shouldnt need the 17m, but then again??? I'm comfortable riding the Zeph up to 20knts, and it might be worthwhile having the option and a spare kite? Or should I just take the 12m?
Im only looking for comments on Malolo (big Island) not Lailai (small Island) as I dont plan on travelling down there. Feedback from anyone who has stayed on Malolo at either Malolo Island Resort, Walu Beach, Funky Fish or Likuliku resorts would be great.
Am I dreaming in thinking Im going to get some kiting in here, or shall I just leave my kite gear at home and spend some quality time with the wife and kids?
Hopey
I may have been lucky, was at Malolo Island Resort in Sep 08 wind was SSE 15 to 20 knots for 4 out of 6 days
The beach is narrow & consists of Sand & coral but the coral is raked away most mornings.
Had to watch out for the Sea plane comes in most days
Likuliku was sheltered from the wind
I can't speak of Malolo itself, but you have a better than 50-50 chance of getting wind in sept. It is the end of there trade wind season. I'd definatly take my gear, Kite and surfboard, either way you should score.
You holiday sound tops
Hopey I reckon you've got it pretty sussed. We had dinner one night at that place and the food was awesome and all the kids were having a ball! You'll be able to do a bit of twin-tipping in that bay if it blows but you'll need to organise a boat if you're heading out to the waves. The kids will help your luggage allowance so you should take both kites. Sounds like a grat trip.
September is still in the trade season and Malolo is a great family resort. You can launch off the west corner in SE trades. The wind line can back off a lot earlier down that way so make sure you have someone watching you as the currents can be quite strong. If you do get up this way stop in for a beer at the Waqa bar. Happy holidays!!
Thanks for the comments guys.
Sounds like i'll be in with a decent chance of getting some kiting in, so i'll take both kites. Fortunately with the 2 young boys they each get 23kg luggage allowance as well, so I should be ok with all my gear on the luggage allowance front.
Cant wait to hit the slopes in Cardrona, followed by a week on Malolo ![]()
