Hello kiters,

I looking for some input to help me decide on a good family holiday kiting destination:
ideal scenario:
travel mid October
kids club for 3, 6, 8 year olds
easy to fly to
accommodation right on the beach, sheltered from the wind but kite spot within walking distance. I don't need a school or hire equipment
Wind around 20 knots And crystal blue warm water is a must.
has anyone been to Daydream Island? Does it meet these criteria? If so which resort and room type is on the beach.
price is not a big issue.
thanks for sharing your experience

Leave everyone else at home with their wishlists of kids club and civilisation - and go to a real windy place of your choosing.

Hi mate, I lived on daydream island in my younger pre-kiting years. Was a tough gig being barman at the swim up pool bar, but that's another story
Not really suitable for kiting. Limited launch spots, small beaches made of broken coral, trade winds put you out on either side of the island on 4-5kn current. No way you are making it back to the island if things go bad. Some good spots a boat ride away but very expensive to make this happen and wind can be flukey. Suggest looking elsewhere.
Side note, I went back there for a family holiday about two years ago as a part of a staff reunion. Resort was quite rundown and off the chart expensive for everything.

Simon.

you wont find the spot you are looking for in the Whitsundays, not to many kiting spots for the average holiday maker on a family vacation.
dont forget stinger season officially starts in october for north qld

Maybe try the sunshine coast

The reference to kids club makes me think you are looking for a resort ? Sounds a lot like Fiji but October is too late - I think May is best. Have you looked at Mui Ne Bay in SE Vietnam ? A mate went and said it was pretty amazing, has resorts etc. not sure what time of the year is best. What about Lord Howe island ? Otherwise pretty much all of WA is windy then ....

I've just got back from Mana island in Fiji.

It ticks all your boxes except wind!... I got one session in, in 5 days with 2 other possible times i could have kited but it wasn't appropriate because of the family activites. Wind maxed out at 17-18 knots on one day, 13-15 on the other 2 kitable occasions. Suprise, suprise there's a 20+ knots forcast for the next few days after i left.

I don't know about the wind there in October?

The conclusion i came to is this. tropical island wind is light and fickle and cannot be relied on. i wouldn't go there for a kiting trip unless I purchased a last minute ticket and went there based on a good forecast. For a family trip it was awesome with the added bonus of kiting if the wind pulled up high enough. But you would have to go there with the mind set that you will not kite and it will be an added bonus when if you do get a session in.

Also what i discovered if its hot enough. 30 degrees. The family doesn't care is its a bit windy. Infact it cools them to a better temp.

PS my kids are 6,8,10. they loved it.

Horrocks Beach, Western Australia. Stay at horrocks beachside cottages. Hits all your points. Just bear in mind that nightlife is self created, but your kids will have a ball. The kids club is the jetty, where they can swim, fish, make sandcastles, play in the park on the playground etc...

Penghu island, Taiwan.
We have lots of wind from OCT to March.
Water is clean and around 25 C.
Many empty beaches to kite.

Not sure what your'e budget is, but the Sheraton Mirage on Main Beach at the Gold Coast definitely ticks all the boxes. SeaWorld just down the road, great beach and surf out the front, or the broadwater behind. Over the years I have taken my family up there many times, and I reckon it's one of the best holiday places in the world. Closer to home, consider a beach house rental between Goolwa and Victor Harbour.

She doesn't look cheap. How expensive was the resort though?

I agree, for a family holiday spot the goldie is a good choice. In october the sea breezes should be kicking in most afternoons. The problem with most good kiting holiday spots is they don't cater for the rest of the family very well, and if they aren't happy whats the point.
