Hi chaps and chappettes,
I'm heading down to Dunny this weekend and am desperate for a kite. It's been over 3 weeks
since my last decent sesh and the cold turkey is wearing thin.
I won't have seabreeze dot com handy so will have to go the best/safest odds depending on what the wind is doing.
Any good tips for Busso-Marg spots would also be cool.
Any tips for:
East?
SE?
SW? (pref with minumum rock action)
Is the main bay in Dunny ok for Easterlies (in the morning?)
I prefer riding the ocean (not used to massive waves though) rather than flat but at this stage if someone farted I'd have my 16m up to get a boost quick-sticks mate!! ![]()
Cheers

Unfortunately, Dunsborough isn't a good kite spot due to the topography. The sw is blocked by the ridge that runs across the top of the cape, and the easterly (which is usually very gusty and on/off) is an onshore. Dunsborough Bay points due East but as you move closer to Busselton, it starts to point North again, so, I have got away with it once there. Like I say though, the Easterly is usually naff.
Having said that though, my mate was there a few weeks ago, jagged a Northerly and had a great time.
I am not an expert on the area but you would be better back at Busselton or on the Yallingup side. However, the latter can be rather wild at times. Don't do it alone. A big problem is that the bays have headlands that throw long wind shadows - if you get pushed off course for any reason you can find youself becalmed and in trouble!
If you go into the Dunsborough Tourist Bureau, you should find a brochure for a kite instructor based at Margs who will have better info for you. He is friendly and would be happy to give advice.
Happy kiting.
Ta Loz.
Geez I am gettin desperate. A drive back up to Busso one arvy might have to be the go...
I will have to be extra nice to wifey to excecute that manourvre though ![]()
there is a beach bout 5km north of busso called forest beach. it is great for sw-w. be carefull though cause it is really common for the wind to turn offshore in a matter of 30 min. i got done once and had to let go of my new kite :( mainly from lack of experience.it ended up on bun beach... lucky i had my number on it. was pretty destroyed but still flyable. never seen another kiter there either so if its good winds your up for some good fun
hey getfunky,
i'm heading down Augusta this long weekend it's supposed to be picking up there.. have you ever been there? along the river and out the river mouth it's a awsum spot for nice flat Water![]()
or over the dunes out the ocean for waves, my Fav place to go when theres no wind in Australind![]()
hope all is well,
Brad.
Yallingup is a top spot and only a few minutes drive from Dunno.
I rode there last time i was down there and it was epic, big sandy beach, works well in the south wester and picks up some awesome swell on the reef. If waves aren't your thing just play to the right of the reef and they won't bother you.
One of the best spots i have ridden i reckon, but then i did catch it pretty perfect. Oh and i was the only guy out!
Gangbusters.
Have fun...
Bumpety bump....
Sorry to bump up folks but am still in the dark for spots around this area.
also keen to know if the Yall beach launch/land is dodgy?
Cheers
yalls ok if wind filled in, go to north most carpark, start of old bears track, walk down stairs to beach, just south rabbit hill
wind can be dodgy as all hell at times- see posts around early jan on seabreeze
other spots - lefties car park stretch of beach, open to wind safe launch land, no one around, waves not so good thou
ellenbrook
boat ramp gnarabup
grunters
boojidup beach - no good if swell up thou
boranup beach
tons of spots just use imagination
watch the wind can switch off very quickly
has anyone kited injidup? or Pea Break?
its one of my fave surf spots (along with 100 thousand other ppl) and cant wait till im ready to kitesurf some bigger surf.
i know the headlands are gonna play havoc with the wind -
just wondering if anyones been out there b4
inji is cross-off in ssw wind = good luck
conti's imho (have had the same thoughts) would be good especially big right bommy in the middle of the bay
like yalls probably better to walk up the beach to get clean air launch
dont get down south these days so havent kited there much apart from the above
guillotines/gallows? (The northern one with the beach and without the cliffs - can nver remember which is which!!!)
Ta for the tips fellas.
I'm not gonna have too much time (lucky wifey has greenlighted kiting at all this weekend) to compare spots but will post some feedback on the results.
UPDATE:
Lucky me (sort of) I scored some crankin wind at Yalls on Sunday.
At 1st look Yalls looked a bit full on with 'holey' wind on the beach and a thick neck breaker dumping real heavy in the shallows. I decided to check out Lefties and was tempted to go out but by the time i got down to the shore the place was ferral as fk!
It was like a steriod fueled washing machine out there and not a witness in sight. My Darwinesque survival voice kept saying "don't go mate" so as I am getting wiser in my old years I listened, took all my gear back to the car and drove around some more.
After waisting an hour driving around I ended up back at Yalls. The shorebreak had lightened up a bit and the wind had picked up so out on my old 9m C I went. Well that is after having all sorts of dramas just gettin off the beach!! The wind was "filled in" in the bay but right on the water line there were holes to drive a Mack through... After much hassle and embarressment I eventually got past the break but still didn't find clean air until about 70-100m out.
At 1st I was cursing my choice of 9m (I am usually cautious) then it just went crank and i was in the sweet zone nicely powered, rockin upwind and doing monster jumps off the abliging Yall ramps. Sooo sweeeeet maaaate.![]()
Only me, one other kiter and 2 polleys having a blast for an hour or so. Had the 1st truly great sesion in a month. But then just as I had been warned I felt the wind dropping as I headed back out from a run. I thought ok I'll finish this run and head in... too late the wind literally just switched off!!! My kite fell out of the sky and there am I in around the break and not even fart velocity wind. Belive what you hear about the wind in these parts it is on/off just like that. Weird.
Through the miracle that is 5th line I managed to eek the kite into the air and do kamikaze dives/loops through the power zone to get most of the way back in before the kite ditched into the shallows... had to throw my bar away as the kite caught a little wave and ended up with my kite in a shockin mess (but still no real damage) and my lines caught around reef/rocks!! This was a major hassle to get free of and left the whole set-up in a state I haven't seen since my 1st season... what a hassle.
Later in the carpark I spoke to one of the poley who had the same thing happen, and got caught out when the wind died, but the poor sod got tumbled in the shorebreak snapping his mast etc!!![]()
All up Yalls is not for the feint hearted (or 1 kite quiver) rider. The outside section is awesome but the getting in and out may well outway the ride.
For me I still had a wicked time but then I haven't tackled my lines yet... and If I hadn't have been so deprived lately it might all have been too much.
Still had an awesome sesh though... he he yeh was worth it.![]()
