I've been messing around on my mutant the last few weeks and I'm having a ball, it's perfect for the 2 foot slop we get here over summer.
Its got my wondering if any rides them anymore as I haven't seen anyone else on one here and in the Southwest
Only weirdo's and freaks!
I'm one of those weirdo's. A well setup mutant is freaken good fun and is the slayer of ****ty and nuking conditions.
there have been some mutants sneaking back into the market, cab tronic is one example, not sure how popular they are never seen any on the water.
Rode a Jimmy Lewis Rad F for years when living in WA
still have it get it out on the sloppy days here in QLD now
have to actually ride theses rather than just stand on the modern cut offs and go with the flow
makes for some bloody good fun![]()

I just getting back into it after a long lay off 12+ years. I took my old mutant out a fair few times and it still rides really well. I am a lot happier jumping that than I am my strapped surfboard. It is kind of like a jack of all trades board. Does a bit of everything but not the best at anything. I like it in slop too as it rides nicer than my wakeboard, jumps nicer than my surfboard. I never really ever ride it backwards. every now and again, just for the novelty I guess because I can. Its more just a tiny directional that jumps well. I am surprised there are not more dedicated directional out there, other than surfboards. Or there might be but I don't see them,
Always worth having in your quiver for those odd days, i could never have one as my go to board unless your lucky enough to be in that perfect spot, i had a love hate relationship with my alkita, was the bollocks on certain days, and was a c,,,,t of a thing on others,
Yep they can be awesome and frustrating but still great fun. Hopefully give it a big run on your downwinder at the wind fest , I reckon it'll be sick fun through the headbuts section
The key to a good mutant is binding position. Not to offset that its ****house going backwards and not too far forward that wave riding suffers too much. You then need a nice amount of nose scoop to allow you to bomb steep waves, But not so much that its too power-hungry riding backwards.
My mutant is most of those things. Its a little too power hungry. But other than that it is truly fantastic. i can and do ride any wave anyone on a surfboard rides locally. Plus I can ride the shallows, Boost to Africa and back and ride deep into rocky locations without a fear of tearing out fins or damaging foam.
There is a time when a mutant is the best board to have. That is in insane conditions. When the swelll is too big the TT riders evaporate. It gets hard to ride TT's in monster swell without nose-diving them. When conditions become washing machine style hectic the SB riders evaporate. The need a bit of cleat water to do the foot switch. That leaves the lone mutant rider slaying the stupid conditons with both TT's and SB's no longer having fun.
I've got one more binding setting today to try out and I reckon I'll have that sorted. I aso find fin configuration plays a big part . To much fin and it catches terribly going backwards and not enough you can't slash off the top. Bit more mix and matching and it should be sweet . I'm with you I love paddle surfing but find it pretty boring on a kite in our pissweak summer swells.

I just picked up a Mako King yesterday, had the first ride set up in TT position on the usual Perth metro downwinders. I've already got the 150 but I'm a bit heavier now and wanted the 165x40 as an alternative to a surfboard for travelling. I'll have to experiment with some of the mutant options but for now I only ridden in in TT mode with the 2.5" centre fin.
It's defintely harder on the legs compared to my fone bamboo surfboard with soft deck pad (think plush) but it holds a rail like nothing else and was amazing being able to ride hard upwind on my heel side which I cannot do properly on my SB. I'm a goofy and suck at going right in Perth - always getting pulled off the face onto the flats. Not with the King - going right I can carve back up the face, stall it and basically it makes it super easy to get into the pocket. The Mako makes me feel I'm kiting with a skateboard / snowboard - heaps and heaps of fun being able to jump and carve and get back upwind to redo a section etc. with the rounded outline it never catches or digs in- it's flawless in this respect.
ill probably keep to the surfboard for normal 1hr+ downwinders (for comfort) but this mako is going to be excellent for general riding where I need to be able to hold ground and for travel as a hybrid TT / surfboard that can do a bit of everything.
Thanks to Puppet for sorting me out with this one!!!
