End of last Sunday's downwinder: car full of indigenous teenagers nearly runs over my mate while he's loading his kite into the car, then a guy hops out, snatches a purse off a woman near the Wild Fig and gets back in the car. Screaming and chasing ensues, and the genius driver turns down the dead end street to the south. A woman then gets out of the car with a baseball bat and starts bashing cars and other people until the police arrive seconds later and get things under control. This all transpired in a matter of maybe 2 minutes. I missed it, as I was rinsing my board and loading into the car, but this is what I gather happened from blokes I talked to. Anyone who saw more detail, please chime in and correct me where necessary.

Then, one week later, at the end of yesterday's downwinder, we had just finished loading into the car at the same spot, and a dodgy guy comes up with a dodgy proposition. He says he's lost a really expensive gold ring ($5k) in the area and is offering a $500 cash reward for it. He does not appear to be actually looking for anything on the ground...seems way more interested in getting someone engaged in whatever scheme he was pulling. Then he tells my mate he has some ripcurl watches for sale that are "much nicer than that watch you got on". I told him good luck finding your ring...then as we are leaving, I see him with his buddy on the other side of the carpark, scoping out potential victims.

We suspected the scam was this: guy 1 entices you away from your recently unlocked car with the promise of $500 if you can find this missing ring, hope you forget to re-lock your car, then guy 2 comes in from behind and cleans out your car, or maybe even steals the car if the keys are in it.

Anyone else seen these guys?? Keep you guard up around Brights this season is my advice...

Was speaking to a lifeguard at the end of last season and he said this was a common stunt on the beach.

One plus about going to the beach on really windy cold days. No scum bags like this around just to cold for them.

I saw the plod and some ambos down that end around 4pm yesterday. Police interviewing a few people and ambos seemed to be treating someone. Wonder if that was related?

Saw that same guy on Saturday at Brighton ... He was looking for a fight while the girl was going around our cars and checking what was in ... dodgy as.

Anything we can do with the council ?

Better stop at Trigg if you do a downwinder on the week end.

Everybody has a smart phone these days - the old SB adage - pics or it didn't happen - and hello, hello, what's going on here - that's what someone calls "evidence".....

Scarborough has always been like this. I walked home from the pub once when i lived there and people were beating each other unconscious with bricks. The servo there is psycho, don't ever let any women you know fill up there alone late at night.

The cold windy days is when they break into your car because there are generally less people around.

I've found the same. Stormy winter kites/surfs seem dodgy as. . had my car smashed into there.

I think **** like this is relevant to everyone that kites as these tactics can and generally will happen to every unsuspecting person regardless of where they are based!

*sigh*

On a positive note this is the first of the "usual" comments this season. This must mean that the kitesurfing season has truly begun

Merry 2014/15 season to you all.

PS, What 5 letter swear word ends in an N? Not having a go, just want to add it to my vocab next time my kite hits the water.

Well there must be a Scarborough in Bolivia or something???

I live in Scarborough WA for the past 20 years, I have 3 young daughters and a dog and they all risk their lives everyday by walking those streets!!!
Lol, I love Scarb, a real holiday feel in the centre of a big city, great community feel, awesome beaches and guaranteed sea breeze to cool you down everyday.

The antisocial behaviour is basically non existent (a 1000 times better than it was in the old look out, stamford arns , contaccio and indian ocean bar days), there are actually great free activities such as concerts at the beach amphitheatre, a new night market, new water front eateries opening...

I fuel at that servo at night at least once a week and am yet to be raped

So what if there is the odd biff or drunken behaviour, I don't want a nice clean suburb full of rich old farts to attend polo tournaments on the foreshore, I want to see life, activities, street art, markets exhibition, lots of kids and young people, it makes me feel younger.

My 7 year old daughter is doing capoeira at the ampitheatre with her feet on the sand overlooking the sunset this Saturday to the sound of live Brazilian music, maybe we should stay home and watch the news instead, I heard that there was a couple of murders

Get out and enjoy your life

Hmmmmm, I would have thought the Eastern State crew would welcome the WA crew with open arms. Whislt honing your skills, I would assume it's invaluable to have riders in your midst that could direct you toward obtaining a level of proficiency we take for granted here. Just saying.

Scarborough WA is a lot like Freshwater beach in Sydney. It has an arterial Road directly connecting it to the lowest breed suburbs in the metropolis. Toothless Rayleens and Tommos will always show up on warm weekends

Hmmmmm, Anything like surfing with the Bra Boys at Maroubra? I do agree, the agro can stay here. I'll pass some flyers around the local haunts referencing your concerns.
