Hey guys i recently bought a Carbinha convert 08 9m.
I was just wondering what powerdrive ratio should a beginner use? 2:1 or 1:1
any ideas?

Thanks!

it depends on what you want? a more direct feel? or more depower its you personal option don't let any one say 2:1 is **** when you might like 2:1 better that 1:1. i like 1:1 better but if you are learning and you have the option for a 2:1 set up i would use that especially if you are going to be kiting in strong conditions (30 to 40 knots) and you are learning i would use 2:1 it will help a heap when you want to get solid up wind ground in strong conditions, once you get the hang of your board control and having the option of depower move to 1:1 and this will get you more hours on the water not in it!

hope this helps.

Going 2:1 helps you polish your guns too.

if you are going to be kiting in strong conditions (30 to 40 knots) and you are learning.

Just a query not about balls, but this said 40 knots sounds a bit far fetched statement to me mate?
Also either one of three things the so called guys on the 11m in 40 knots is either 110kg's or more, the wind speed is wrongly judged, or he's just plain stupid and not very experienced.
Lastly if you think telling a beginner to grow balls and go out in 30-40 knot winds is on the money then I'd hate to go to the casino with you buddy.

But afro I think disregard the other rubbish comments and you'd enjoy overall the 1:1 bar a bit more , as it's more responsive more direct feel and easier to feel when you progress and never need look at your kite again just using bar feel.
40 knots pffft......what a joke

Just wondering how long you've been kiting mate? , as you seem to be way off the mark with your wind speeds and sizes, I'm 90 kg's and I can just hold down my sb3 depowered in 40 knots, which I try to avoid as gusts can be big in stormy conditions.
Me thinks your talking out of the wrong hole mate.

I've ridden my 9m REV in 27 Knots, still controlable I weigh 50-55kg.
Maybe these people have more than one kite and haven't needed to go out of the wind range, they can just change to a smaller size
oh, and for the post..... try the kite on both 1:1 and on 2:1..... I prefer 1:1.

Depowered where you riding past the stopper, have u ever tried pulling in you middle lines when big gusts come through? this depowers the kite even more. i am not talking out of the wrong hole. i have kited in winds recorded gusting to 40 knots averaging between 33 - 36 knots. yes i do agree i may have been wrong to say yeah go out in 30 -40 knots.

also i wasn't telling a learner to grow balls i was taking the piss. 40 knots is strong

sorry to all who i have pissed off you can take offense to my silliness, and now burn me some more.

If did that trick when the kite was out of its wind range the bastard would invert, then there would be more problems, i need to slow right down... right down and hold some pressure on the back lines to help the kite keep is shape and not invert.... Not that i condone kiting with a kite too big for the conditions, thats why i bought a 9m as well, now 30 knots looks like fun, not a scary and generally not particularly enjoyable session..

answer to the question, as mentioned by someone else, try both, then after a while kiting, try the other way again and see what you think, its always good to try things, different boards, different kites and different set ups, you learn from it all.
