Hi all, as the season is about to start. Remember to have a look over your lines.

I had an incident today in gusty conditions, under heavy load, I snapped both port side lines.

Don’t risk it, at times today I was 500m offshore.

Thanks to the two lads who helped me, Long and Ozone rider with helmet,

Front line snapped at the knot, the steering line snapped 6m down.

Couple a things. don't loop 500m out at sea, that is stupid.

Secondly why do some manufacturers not colour code their lines? That is bloody stupid....... dangerous.... unsafe... dense....

The problem is visually one cannot see if a line is weak or about to break. Unless it's obvious, like fraying, stretching, etc then it's a risk either way.
generally, I replace my lines ever 2 years. It's the only way to be sure they won't break under load.

Plummet, Bro, I don't loop 500m out to sea. I use large tacks. Who's to say it couldn't have snapped due to a gust?

Last time I snapped a line was when I was learning. Better to be safe than 500m offshore with boots on.

Hi Manicskier, I said at times I was 500m offshore.

You cant take two conversations and put them into one quote. My second post was in reply to Swinginthewind.

Hope that will clarify things for you.

What he said, you shouldn't have knots in any of your lines, knots weaken the lines put massive strain on the line fibres... Doesn't matter how good the lines are knots will kill them.

Ever slack lined a kite and landed in or by the lines... Coloured lined help to know what ones are the dangerous ones? which ones to unwrap first before the lines tension again and deglove what ever they are wrapping around
Ever been in the waves with the white wash so big you can't see ya bar only the lines coming out of the water?
No?

Maybe your not kiting hard enough.

Hey Plummet, yeah i've had lines wrapped over my head in 30 - 35 kts and head and a half swell. Just went off my surfboard as i was overpowered so went to my wakeboard. Decided to loop late and got heaps of slack that i ran into.

Couldn't tell what color the lines were under water nor cared, the only thing i knew was to get them off before my kite hot launched down wind, lucky the reason i was underwater was i just got smashed by a wave and it sheltered my kite. To this day the most adrenalizing and frightening experience I've had.

If like to think in that situation next time is reach for my knife, but reactions are funny things when time is of the essence.

I don't need a p!ssing contest! enjoy your colored lines, im a black and white kind of guy!

Apart from being posted by Loftywinds, why did this get loads of red thumbs?

You can't tell if lines are about to break just by looking at them. It's a bit over the top to replace lines every two years, but it's not the dumbest idea there is.

Colour coded lines are a good idea, but it's not the most important thing there is. Any line wrapped around your fingers is risking de-gloving in strong conditions. Colour coded leaders and pigtails are far more important for general convenience and usability.

Don't all brands have knots on the inside lines and loops on the back steering lines. ( or vise versa)

Aka kook proof??

Who has knots on all their 4 bar lines?

Me and I think lots of other people with Best kites, as that is why I changed my bars to all knots. Just got to double check before launch, but it's not that hard to run your lines out properly.

I thought I did have them back to front on the old school C, as it wouldn't depower, but that was just that kite!!

No kite lines have knots in them. Pig tails and leaders might but not the lines. Pig tails and leaders are made out of 1100kg 3 mm dyneema. Lines are much thinner and weaker than that. At best 300kg.
