Disclaimer: This is a noobish question, so please be gentle...then rough

I'll be completing my lessons over the next couple of weeks and I would prefer to have my own basic kit setup (wetsuit, booties, gloves etc) and not have to hire, so I can be comfortable and be able to learn in the gear I'll be using.

I have a 5/7mm semi-dry I use for diving, but I was hoping someone could recommend or point me in the right direction in regards to choosing the best brand/style wetsuit for kitesurfing (in Sydney climate).

Am I able to use my current wetty for both diving and kitesurfing? I'm assuming it's best to have seperate gear for each due to differences in requirements and wear etc. Any info will help.

Cheers

If you wear a 5/7 kitesurfing you will end up really hot. You expend a lot of energy kitsurfing. I suspect the thickness of the neoprene is also really going to restrict your mobility - get a wetsuit with really stretchy neoprene.

The only time I have seen people use dry suits is in the UK in the winter and spring. And most guys have a special kite dry suit which is like a baggy boiler suit to allow mobility.

I have a 3/2 West steamer with fluid seams and fleecy chest (pyro fleece I think they call it) If it gets cold I put a thermal rashie under it.

At the moment I am just riding with a Spring suit in Melbourne, and will wear just boardies and my long sleeve rashie when it gets a bit warmer.

As far as gloves and booties go - I wouldn't bother - unless you ride in winter - I find gloves prevent me getting a good grip on the bar and strain the muscles in my forearms.

Booties are only worthwhile if you are learning in an area that is hard on your feet like lots of rocks or reef underfoot. Otherwise I prefer to ride bareback because you can grip the board better with your toes.

I would hold off on buying anything until when you buy all your kit in one hit - then you can get a discount from the retailer.

Great response london,

I was thinking it may get a bit warm in a full wetsuit, as I tend to be comfortable all year round in the water as it is anyway and am not too worried about the cold out of winter months.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep in mind my bargaining advantage for when I go all in for a package.

the billabong foils are good, long arms, short legs. they last ages and keep you warm enought in winter and are great in summer. around $200 but worth it

Ripcurl "bomb" !!! 4mm is very flexy but if too warm you simply remove the firewall from the back.

Triple X 3/2 Combo. Superwarm for their weight. Titanium lining. Slick panels on chest and back (great for wind chill) Cant be beaten.

Look them up at www.triple-x.com.au/

Currently have 20% off all suits as well.

Great blokes. Aussie owned and made. I have no affiliation with them but reckon they make great gear.

This looks like the go.. kitesurfing is really harsh on wetsuits so get one as cheap as you can.. my $160 XCEL springy lasted one season..

U don't need a steamer for Sydney... unless u kite inland water in winter.
Going out with a 5-7mm will kill u before u get the kite up.

Any sealed seam 3mm will do u just fine for any Sydney weather... maybe add some boots.

I use a 2mm West vest + 2mm Jet Pilot shorts, same as a springy but not as lame
