I'll be buying a couple of new revs in the not too distant future and got to thinking about the type of discount you would expect to get. I would like to buy from my local shop but not willing to pay hundreds more. The prices i have been given vary a fair amount, obviously i will shop around and take the best price to the other stores, but i am interested in what you would expect to save when buying two kites (retail $3600, 9m & 13m revs) 10%, 20% 30%? Maybe someone has done this recently?
Thanks in advance for the info.
hey kiteboard
I am a retailer form Cairns and just thought i'll help keep your expectations of getting a discount a bit real.
The margins in kite are very diferent to buying a pair of jeans or a tshirt.
If the retail shops gives you 20 % off rrp they will be making no money ...or very little. Yet you will expect them to sort out any warranty issues etc.
My suggestion is that if yo u got 10% then you are getting a deal and the ratailer will have made some money and be able to offer you some on going service.
One last point - make sure you get the right size revs - I have seen a lot of guys buy a 9 and 13 when they would be better off on 7 /11 -
the 13 feels a 15 fuel and the 11 rev have about the same range as a 13 fuel.
If you want discount buy 2 yargas and get one free!!!
it's not slingy who give out the discount it's the little local shop you want to support... they give you discount and the next guy and the next and on and on... before you know your shop aint there any more as he's closed due to making no money...
At our shop we offer no discount to anyone ever! we do offer free lessons to learners and we do do deals like the best yarga... sold over 20 Revs' in the last 3 weeks and every EVERY person has asked for discount... In short i think it is rude of customers to ask!! small business' and all... support local and buy big! love the sport you're in... If you want cheap kites buy direct from the factories in China... Get what you pay for...
big winds and small kites to all!!

I don't own a small business Posko but I don't know if I agree with the "At our shop we offer no discount to anyone ever!" If you want people to support you, as you say "support local and buy big!" it's a 2 way street. My local shop gives me discount on items just about everytime I go in there. I don't ask for it, but I have been spending money there for over 10 years now and I guess it's their way of saying thanks for the loyalty. I wouldn't suggest giving some random discounts for walking off the street but if guys keep buying gear from you for years on end and you say you won't offer them any incentive, surely you couldn't blame them for going elsewhere.
Anyway, just my thoughts. ![]()
Well heres a different POV, if you ask for a discount at Kitepower, you would normally get it or an offer of something of equal value.
I always put myself in a customers shoes, if a person asks for a discount, and the shopkeeper refuses and is offended, then that is usually the last time that person will shop there.
I often ask for a discount when purchasing items for myself at home, and will not buy until I get what I want!
There is never any harm in asking a question?
How can a question actually be offensive? (think about it)
Refusing a request can be interpreted as offensive though!!
Some customers never aks for a discount, but I often will give them one anyway, if they are a loyal regular.
I agree with Bruce though, shops giving 20% (and more sometimes), will not be in business long, or worse still are not actually a legit business and are supported to trade from their home or the back of their car by "old mate". This dumb practice that continues to continue in our tight industry continues to undermine legit retailers, who have real overheads and who are open when its windy to service your kite, WHEN YOU need it.
The car boot/backyard guys are often out kiting, hard to contact, or just don't want to know about you after the sale, don't carry spares, have limited experience with multi brands and models, etc, etc.

Of course Foz if you came here for 10 yrs and bought gear we'd offer you loyalty rewards... but more on the line of what Steve has said. maybe throw in a dvd or rash vest which is a bonus but not a discount!
Locals and regulars do get looked after but randoms asking for 200 bucks off and then tell you i'll be back after i shop around get nothing.
all opinions in the topic welcome, as it really helps shop owners come up with a plan to keep the regulars happy.
good winds to all!

EDIT: key is too Foz, you don't ask for discount and they respect you for that!
I always ask for the discount, if they say no, well no biggie, but if you get it, you just saved yourself some $$$.
And while this may be completely different you go to big retailers like say Harvey Norman, and basically if you ask, you will NEVER pay the display price for anything over say $300 instore, especially if you buy more then one item. I see display prices as a beginning point for bargaining, but thats just me. They will happily sell stuff for the display price if you don't ask but if you do they usually have no problems knocking 10% of the display price. You save $$$, so imo, can't hurt to ask.
Either way I think most people ask for discounts not because they wanna screw the retailer, its because most of us don't have piles of cash laying around. If I did I would love to throw cash at the manufacturers because that would mean they would have more money to develop better gear.
Yup I would expect a discount if im buying two new kites and not trading in any old ones.
How much of a discount is debatable.
250 bucks from 3k would make me happy little customer, also probably end up spending the 250 on other stuff in the shop... ![]()
