hey guys
been a while
I've been out of action with a constantly mis diagnosed ankle injury
since March
I got some really good advice here back then which led me to recently get an mri to get to the bottom of the problem
it seems after 9 months my Tallis is still badly bruised and I have some tendon damage / inflammation
the only advice I've been given is to rest it
anyone been down this road or have anything useful to add or recommendation for an ankle brace etc or even supplements to help with the recovery
I really want to be back in the water
pare boots a good short cut to get back out there ?

Had similar bone bruising injury with my knee, was told that rest and elevation would help speed the healing process (minimum week off, preferable two, complete rest).
Not always ideal, especially if your self employed, so I just soldiered on.
I had a MRI eventually to help diagnose the problem after several months of Physio and Anti Inflammatory medications.
Recovery to even 80% took a lot longer than I figured
Must be getting old

Hey iggypop,

I had the same thing last year however it was my knee and I had a broken leg to go with it.

Luckily I was surfing after 6 weeks but could not kite for the life of me because of the pain in my knee. Got the MRI and sure enough it was a bruising in my femur.

No idea why yours is taking over 9 months though. I was told to wait it out and I guess it was probably 9 months before it felt good again, but I was kiting after 6 months or so of no kiting, running, wakeboarding or anything that causes impact. My main objective was to follow doctors orders, I've tried the shortcuts before and always end up making things worse!

Good luck

I am now 2.5 months with a sore swollen foot.
Managed a kite and SUP a couple
weeks ago but thats it.

Kayaking has kept me sane as a sit down sport and surprisingly enjoyable.

Full ankle reconstruction for me last year. Removed a chunk of bone from the ankle joint, tightened loose ligaments and cleaned up what little cartilage i have left. Had 6 months off kiting, 6 weeks after op I was back in the gym on an exercise bike with my cast on to keep muscles moving and strong. At 3 months once all casts etc were off the doc was amazed at how much my ankle had recovered. I still have pain but that is inevitable after a big injury but I work harder in the gym to ensure my legs / ankles are strong and I also wear boots all the time now.

If you want a good recovery take some time out concentrate on getting healthy and strong and you will bounce back, if you don't you run the risk of just making your current injury worse or injuring something else as your body will be trying to compensate for the current injury.

Good luck

Hi Iggy, I've got a small loose bit of bone floating in my ankle joint from an accident, cant remember what the doctor called it now, couldn't kite, surf etc very well as it stopped the ankle from moving and would sting like crap if I pushed my knee to far forward over my foot.

He recommended a shot of quarterzone (spelt differently) cortisone I think, I was advised by the ever so wise internet search to never use cortisone. But the one injection has work well for the Last 7 or so years !!

The problem I was having was the calf muscle and Achilles tendon were not going through the correct range of motion causing other problems.

I've tried different ankle braces and none really worked, I had to tape my ankle up with the brown sports tape but that became a pain in the bum.

Also cycling with cleats or the pedal straps works really well as it helped the joint get good blood flow.

Good Luck mate

I did this to myself kitesurfing. The doctor told me I was lucky not to damage my Talus bone he said I would never walk the same again . So rest up do what the doctor says you don't want to do permanent damage .
After the rest period a good exercise is to bury your foot in the sand and then flick the sand off as you pull your foot out and keep repeating .

That looks pretty heavy
just re reading the mri report there is a mention of an occult fracture of the Tallis
i think he mentioned it means the inside of the bone is damaged but not the out side of the bone
that is nine months later so the outside may have been damaged back then
but the whole Tallus bone has changed colour
I've also been told walking in sand is really good
apparently I don't need surgery just rest
I'm sure there would be supplements the strengthen bones and aid recovery
will try chemist tomorrow and see what they say
