Hi. I have a kite, withe bag, pump and bar n lines, wanting to post down to Melbourne. Any recommendations? I am in Cairns. Should i use aus post or is it cheaper with a freight company. And if aus post, do you think folding everything in plastic bags, gaffa taped and sealed should do it?

I used to.glad.wrap the bag a.few.times 5 or six times worked well or go.to crazy Clarks and get one if those cheap moving bags about five bucks and put inside and can.write.on.it with permanent.marker or.put a tag. Etc

Aus post has been the cheapest option, unless you or the receiver have an account with a freight company in what case they offer bulk rates if you're a regular customer

Make sure you send it rego post so the aus post staff don't misplace it ???, or if youre sending to a buyer you can send it c.o.d where they will need to make payment for the kite when they pick it up, Aus post then sends a cheque back to you in the mail.

as Salt mentioned, garbage bag. Packing tape is easier than gaffa and cheaper. Aussie post is the way to go, I usually get a kite from Sydney to south coast in a day. Couple days max.

Hey thanks guys. Do you think putting it in a box will cost much more? I have a box that just fits everything in neatly.

I believe it will as they can then charge u by volume. Greater than weight. An odd shaped round ball and they can only weigh it, saves plenty $$.
Or at least this the story at my local Aus Post.

I posted a kite from Vic to NSW recently, cost $44 with couriers please. No box or extra packaging required, arrived in 2 days. I may have underestimated the size / weight of the kite a bit to get a cheaper rate, but they didnt complain.

The answer to all of these questions is here: auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/calculate-postage-delivery-times/

This is what the people at the post office will use to calculate postage when you front up at the counter. It's fairly simple. smaller, lighter, slower, cheaper

buy two 5kg express bags from aus post. less than $40 bucks for both. fold the kite up as small as you can and put it in one bag and then the pump, bar and bag in the other.

This will take max two days to get to melbourne. Whereas a box with the kite in will take a week and cost twice as much.

Make sure that you tape up the bags seal as it slips with time.

Must of sent 100+ kites this way and never had an issue

e-go

I can get a windsurf sail in a box - 200 x 200 x 2000, 7kg incl box, from west coast to east for $45. (Insured)

If you are paying $40 for a kite, between major towns on east coast, you are getting ripped badly.

Do not ever use Transdirect, windsurf forum full of horror stories.

Wont find anything cheaper than e-go.com.au. Shipped a kite to perth for 17$ so not a valid argument when negotiating a sale from the buy and sell

Well I should have read the rest of this thread.

I put the kite, bar, lines and pump with hose into a 351x300x400 box and took it to AusPost. It weighed in under 7kg and was slugged... drum roll... $64 bloody bucks!

I won't be doing that again.

Don't ever use a box , they measure it with $$ in their eyes. Plastic and tape.

I have to agree with picker.
E-Go is by far the cheapest, shipped a board from Melbourne to Adelaide for $30 in a box.

It seems to vary depending on your destination. I got a quote from the e-go and Auspost web sites and they were almost identical for a parcel going from Melbourne to Albany.
