Hi all!
I am heading to Australia at some point during 2009, probably end of August, and I was wondering where the wind would be good at that time of the year. I did find some generic wind info on various sites but nothing compares to some local knowledge. Any suggestions? I will be going to Melbourne for sure to visit some friends but can really go anywhere as long as the wind is good. Is there perhaps a better time to go in general? I am pretty flexible but would like to get some solid kitesurfing down (Quantas is having an amazing sale right now so I am just quickly trying to nail down a good time to go).
Thanks!
/Jonas
I understand the best time to kite is between dawn and dusk, of course you can kite outside of those times but only during a fullmoon.
Winter time (August is heading towards the end) there are trade winds in North Queensland...
When summer hits (December onwards) Melbourne and Sydney get seabreeze's but not as reliable or as strong as in WA..
Theres a start for ya, research that ![]()
edit... i also agree with between dawn and dusk ![]()
End of August / start of September is not the best time of year in the more populated latitudes, most of the wind is still from gusty winter frontal systems. Up North, however, you can catch some good stuff around then. On the East coast think trade winds Mackay and North, on the West coast Broome starts a short season around then, about 2 months worth, which gets longer as it progresses South, moving about 1000km per month.
edit: snap
Mate as stated earlier, head to nth queensland in august . Great weather good wind. Nth qld is paradise at that time of year. From the sunshine coast(sth qld) down the east coast to the victorian boader you will get gusty westerlys at that time of year. they can be fun to kite in if you get a good day in the right location, but they are inconsistant so you may get a week of good wind followed by 2 weeks of rubbish.
hope this helps
Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I am heading to Queensland then, suits me fine, will do some diving while I’m there. Or perhaps wait until your summer and head over to WA.
Slightly nervous about the dawn to dusk thing though, never tried that but I guess you guys always do it the other way around so why not…
