What are the peoples opinion on the best overseas kite/surfing spots. Thinking bout taking a couple months off next year to travel looking for cheep backpaker budget type places. so far the obvious ones i can think of bali, Png, fiji, thailand. Anyone know of any less common ones? Remote island type stuff would be cool.

Reunion Island/Mauritius

Reunion for the surfing (with some kiting) and Mauritius for the kiting (with some surfing)

I'm not a surfer but met up with a mate in St Leu (Reunion) where we stayed at a sweet backpackers right across the road from the break. The food is Euro prices (it's a little bit of France, but if you cook for yourself it's OK) but the accommodation was cheap. My mate said the wave was sick.

Mauritius is pretty cheap for everything but they don't really do backpackers (part of their tourism policy)- but you can rent a place for cheap with a few friends and there is kiting tourism industry getting established there which makes life pretty easy for you. You can also camp on the beach for free which would make it super budget - hitch rides when you need to get into town for supplies (We icked up hitchers all the time - locals and tourists)

I guess the main issue when you travel for kiting/surfing is getting your gear everywhere. We had to hire a car for both places but without it we wouldn't have got up into the mountains for some amazing canyoning or seen nearly as much as we did. On a backpacker budget, getting around is half the challenge.

If you want real backpacker setup, by all accounts Brazil is the shiz but the season is the same as WA.

July/August in Portugal/Spain might be pretty good now that the euro is cheap and the tourism industry is lowering their prices to get people in.

Greece is awesome at that time - get yourself out to Paros and Naxos for 30 knots from dawn until dusk and they are keen to get money in!

South coast of France (Beauduc) is great - you can camp on the beach there 5 m from the water. Hard to get to and you need a car plus also need to be completely self sufficient.

Hope that gives you some ideas to start with!

Well, the Air Mauritius flight from Melbourne goes on to London and the Air Austral Flight from Sydney to Reunion Island goes on to Paris. They are pretty much half way to Europe!

Hey, i am new at this sport.
But i am travelling around since 14months.
And on Boracay, Philippines, I learned kiting. Best months over there are around November to march.
there was a big competition in Dezember 10, Kiteshops are around and there is everything u need.

Paid around 5dollars (2people 10) for our room, tv, own shower and toilet.

I liked it. Food is cheap. Good parties. Nice spot.

But, as I said, I'm new...
