Hey peeps,

I reckon the 27th or 28th of October (Monday or Tuesday arvie) just after WDST kicks in, sort of a celebration event really

I'd say we kick it off around 3pm and play until 7pm or thereabouts. Weather permitting of course.

Anyone have any better thoughts or will that do? I can't do later in the week due to a demo trip to Esperance.

LOL

Your the bloke who said bows are gay right?

Bows are not gay.....
well, some are.
but doonas are definitely gay.
lol.
And speaking of the term 'gay'.....
Lately I've been thinking about the use and misuse of the label.....
You see,
Straights are like f.a.g.s used to be.
And the f.a.g.s now are more like straights.
F.a.g.s today are all about body-building and pick-up trucks....
and straights are all about 'feelings' and open-toe sandals.

Let me hijack this thread with a question.
Now, how do you turn around?

there is a move known on this forum as the jingo jango

Posted 22/11/2007, 3:37 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The jingo jango explained(note: this is just the name i made for it). *

Most poleys are able to jingo jango with ease as are ballroom dancers and some skateboarders and in most cases yachties could explain it to you. So what is it?

Its a combination of things, most commonly refered to as a jibe with a shuffle, coming about and a revert but involves a little bit more or less depending on where the wave is and when you do the dance.

For example: Wind is coming over your left shoulder as you head out to sea left foot forward, heelside.

1. The Jingo.

You want to head back into shore AFTER you have got past the breakers(or there are no breakers). Simple, send the kite back from whence it came and as it starts through the middle of the NEW power zone do a toeside carve. Just as you finish the carve and you have sufficient power then push the bar away slightly. At precisely(not a second before or after) you do this, move your rear foot just behind your front RIGHT on the EDGE of the board,( this will hold you against your kite and limit the amount of times you do a forward dive which is good footage but not great for you face). At this stage you are still riding toeside with your front foot(a.k.a your left foot) in the middle of the board and your right foot(yes the back one) behind it, but on the edge. Keeping it on(or towards) the edge is muy importante unless you are in the jingo jango bloopers competetion then just put it anywhere you please.

Leave your back foot(right) where it is and move your left foot to the back of the board, anywhere will do, but towards the edge is better. if you have managed all of this and are going forwards and not titanic-cing then re-adjust your feet to their prefferred spot, forwards/backwards/side etc depending on wind and wave conditions and desired speed.

2. The Jango
You want to head back into shore before the breakers(or you want to look cool). A little less simple, push the bar away slightly keeping the kite fairly high, but not to high, bear slightly downwind, apply pressure(ie slightly stall) to the back of the board and do the two step/jango/switcheroo. Replace your front foot with your back foot and vice versa. i.e. jump and switch your feet around. Send your kite back from whence it came and there you go.

Easy? hahahahah, the front section of my board that has perfect shaped indents of my head might argue. why? well i forgot to mention the wave heading towards you that you want to "hit" just after you finish the jango, get it right and oh so sweet, get it wrong and ..well.. .ow!

Both are about timing and lots and lots of practise. Oh, and you need to learn natural to goofy and goofy to natural as well. I still think its easier WITHOUT straps to learn, but if you are an ex-poley you might disagree. Also when kiting in waves on a surfboard you are constantly moving your feet around, i personally find the straps get in the way, but to each their own, just have fun.

* forget everything i have said above, harden up and just do a bl**dy jibe and swap your feet at the same time

OK, Guys and Girls.

As we've had little advice to either date, lets make it the 27th October starting at 2pm. This should be enough time for the wind to build a bit. Cross your fingers and hope for a reasonable swell.

I'll bring the kites, boards and instruction. You bring yourselves and some beer and chips etc. See you at the Cottesloe South launching spot near the playground equipment. Just look for the big white truck! (It's fairly obvious.)

If the weather is no good or the waves are flat (I mean FLAT), I'll make a decision to continue or not the day prior. However, if there is any chance at all of a run, it will go ahead.

Good winds and waves,

^^^ Fixed, for the resemblance it bears not only to a snap-on tools truck, but to an armoured vehicle, full of bank robbers bearing AK47s about to pull a Hollywoodesque heist on some poor unsuspecting financial facility...

Wondering if Cott is such a great place for this. Line up is crowded very easily with half a dozen kites plus the launch n land area is tiny.

Was thinking that maybe Scabs just south of trigg might be better, as there is more beach and more room on the water

Leighton also might be a consideration if the wind isn't too south?

My tuppence worth....

Funny you should bring this up. I have been mulling over the idea of a wave and surf demo session.

Wink. ^^^

To all surf-newbies:
The schools-of-thought for wavekiting on kite-surfboards are as follows;
(which one would you prefer) ???

#1
You gybe the board by changing your feet in the straps.
This allows you to ride frontside on bearaway-waves.

#2
When gybing the board, you never change your feet in the straps.
This means that you ride in a twisted-bowel stance on one tack only (either inbound or outbound).....
which allows you to ride bearaway-waves in tweak mode or goofy frontside (depending).

#3
Strapless wavekiting (unhooked optional)
You can change your stance or choose to maintain one stance only.

I hope this info helps.

Hi Guys,

Due to a rather poor looking forecast for the next few days, and my own rather poor health (nasty cold), I'm goi to pstpone the mini wave clinic until we can be certain of better forecast and my health.

I'll set a new date for probably in a couple of weeks, to allow the wind to settle in a bit more reliably as it's kinda poo at the moment.

Sorry to disappoint but I'd rather run it in decent conditions and when my sinuses aren't about to burst.
It ain't cancelled, it's being postponed. I'll post another thread here again soon.

Good winds,

Good move, especially as I am keen to go to this but aren't able to get the time off work. The wind gods smile on me for once!

Some of this gybing instruction is really good (as good as written instruction can get). Would Laurie be able to compile it into a guide and link from the site? (Like that Ben Wilson wave riding article was?)

That's great news (apart from the cold). I was all set to go today but had to work back and wasn't happy to say the least. I just logged on to check how the day went and I'm stocked to see it was postponed.

Try again next time...

No, the thread originally started with someone asking if Ben would do any clinics down this way.

Then Kitehard kindly offered to do a free clinic if we bring a few beers down etc. so we can all have a good arvo picking up a few tips for wave riding, trying some gear out etc.
