Looking to purchase a beach tent for some shade for my young kids/wife. My main thoughts are that we need a tent that works well in the wind. There's a bunch of popup tents available on ebay but popup makes me think it could be blown more easily. If we have a tent with a floor then I can weigh it down nicely with sand, as long as the poles keep the roof/walls up.
This one looks good but no floor: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Beach-Tent-Australian-For-Life-Surf-Lifesaving-Pop-Up-UPF50-Medium-Sun-Shade-/131001962692?pt=AU_Sun_Shades&hash=item1e805350c4&_uhb=1
I got one from BCF for $50 on special after having a baby (wife not me). Pop up job, fits the family just.
First time I read the instructions carefully, 3 times. Goes straight back down to original shape/size and into case (flat circle 70cm diameter)
2nd time I spent 15 mins cursing on the beach trying to fold it up. Stopped when I noticed that people up and down the beach were watching and sniggering. Managed to jam it in the 4x4 but just, across the back seats and boot.
Spent 3 weeks trying to get it to go back to original size - couldn't do it. Wasn't just me, got the wife, neighbors, in-laws to try, with instructions, no-one could do it.
Finally spent an hour struggling with it one day, reading the instructions 10 times, finally worked out exactly where to grab and when to twist and which bits to force till they feel like breaking, then they finally twist into place. Not I can set up in 20 secs and pack it up in 1 minute every time. Eventual Win. ![]()
Ha ha - that's so funny kiteboy!! The hoop type (pack up into a circular bag) actually work really well on the beach as they give both shade and wind protection - just fill up the outside pockets with sand to hold them down!! I once saw a family that finally gave up trying to work out how to get it back in its circular bag and simply strapped the flatpacked beach shelter to the roof racks and drove off - not sure if the beach shelter made it home!!!!
With the hoop types - best to practice at home first ;-)
Haha we have a little circular pop up tent for our wee man. The first pack up took 1.5 hours to complete. We had an earth scientist, a doctor, a computer programmer, and I'm a carpenter. No one could figure it out. The earth scientist finaly sorted it with the help of YouTube.
It's easy once you have done it once or twice.![]()
We also have a beach pop tent with rope and folding poles. You just pull the rope straight up and the poles concertiner out. It has a floor and pockets on outside to fill with sand. Can open the back door to let wind blow straight through when it starts getting hectic. Folds up to the size of a folding deck chair. It struggles in anything over 20 knots![]()
I've now gone back to the humble beach umbrella. Get 3 reuseable shopping bags, fill with sand and string to tie to the umbrella. Simple and it works.
Yeh I have gone back to the old umbrella as well. When the wind is really up my family won't stay anyway.
We have got one of these from Bunnings "Wanderer Swift Instant Beach Shelter"
It's lasted about 3 seasons now and handles the wind very well.
Just fill the carry bag with a bit of sand, chuck it in the tent and it will sit there while your on your 6m kite.
There is a definite art to folding them up though.
Have a practice at home first if you don't want to look like a goose
An old bigass C kite,like 18mt Flow.
Sand on wingtips fifth line to peg in sand.
Everybody has 1 some where stashed,
just incase they come back into fashion????
