Hey guys
Anybody have info on kitesurfing Sumatra.
At this stage thinking of exploring north i.e starting in Aceh. Only interested in good wave setups.
I dont expect you to tell me all the secrets just a few pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Only travelled there , not kited.
Banda Aceh beautiful place. Friendly people. Easy to get about. If you are not surfing / kiting there is plenty to look at.
Lhoknga the main spot , 30 easy minutes from airport. Reef breaks outside flat water , some beach breaks as welL.
There are a few well established surf / kite camps - had a look and they looked comfy and well run.
You can find them on the net easY enough.
Looks like the wind is quite reliable at certain times of the year. Would love to go back and try the kiting.
Thanks for that info.
Did you travel south of Aceh at all?
Im looking for a place to explore and hoping to find a few options of waves ?
On google earth it looks like there is not a lot of options either side of Aceh?
Cheers
Would Aceh be able to keep the wife and kids happy... or should we head back to mauritius again this july.
No mate. Only around that spot.
Talked to a couple of old surfy brothers form Oz , Newcastle I think. They stay there a month or two every year for the surf , so must be ok.
Apppently not too crowded I gather.
there must be other people on the forum who have been there
Would Aceh be able to keep the wife and kids happy... or should we head back to mauritius again this july.
Hmmm. Depends on what you mean by happy. It's not a Bali...only shopping in Banda Aceh. None at the surf locations.
The beach seemed pretty safe for kids.
I had heard that aceh has good consistent wind and a fair bit stronger than the rest of indo so I was doing a little googling the other day to try get an idea of how safe it is there now as in the past there was a lot of political turmoil and it wasn't considered a safe place to holiday.
From what I can tell it seems fairly safe BUT it is the only province in Indonesia governed by sharia law!!
Apparently it is illegal to be alone in the same room as somone of the opposite sex who is neither related to you or married to you- they also perform public canings apparently 167 official public canings since the law was introduced in around 2005!!![]()
From what I could tell it seemed that westerners holidaying in aceh were not adversely effected by these laws but it's definitely something to bear in mind when considering a holiday.
So if your tripping through aceh maybe just keep it chill and i'd probably rule out any Australian- Indonesian romance if I were you ![]()
was there a few years back stayed in LhokNga, Eddie's home stay. Very laid back place with plenty of very friendly people, took kiting gear but could have left it at home, very reefy all over, left a fin and box there somewhere. was closed out most of the time and couldn't find the mythical A frame. Island to the north has some OK diving tourism but not over run. Banda Aceh is not for family tourism, you will struggle to get a T- shirt in xl. Sharia law doesn't affect westerner's too much, you can buy beer at a premium, all seems pretty casual on the surface if you are not a Muslim. Go with a backpack and travel around that area
Ok.. Thanks for all the info guys...maybe I need to rethink a place to explore in indo if I want to get some good down the line kiting....
Anyone have any suggestions was still hoping to goto Sumatra but not set in concrete ?
...not interested in crowds like id imagine Lakey would be like..
Thanks
When in Sumatra my girl was sunbaking (not topless) locals strung a dog up from a tree by the neck and lynched in front of her.
Don't leave anything (even booties)on the beach like you would in Oz or it will be gone.
Woman to dress very conservatively they definitely more strict moslem even in the south.
Otherwise its was sick
