Hi all,
Please note:
1. I am a snowboarder that wants to get into Kite surfing
2. I made this decision about a week ago :) sorry
3. I know pretty much zero about kite surfing.
However I am transporting a Land Rover Discovery from the UK to WA at the end of the week and could therefore buy some starter gear in the UK and ship it over with the car. I could also get some others some (within reason) gear and bring it too.
Knowing nothing about the Kite surfing set up in the UK and WA and with a week to go to get organised, I reckon I've pretty much left it too late to make anything of the opportunity to bring gear over, however wondered if you could help.
Can anyone let me know if it is:
a) Worth buying anything in the UK and bringing it over, is it cheaper?
b) What is good to help me get set up
c) If there is anything (again within reason) that I could ship for them to WA to return a favour.
Cheers

When I tried to ship my car domestically it had to be empty.
Might be worth checking, I don't know the rules internationally.
Thought exactly the same thing , but turns out it can be full if there is an "unaccompanied personal effects statement" completed.
Found out last week, which is why everything is so last minute.

bring me a few cartons of boddingtons draft (cream of Manchester) some decent tea, sausages, mcvitties chocky digestives, and ill give you free kiting lessons
so maybe you've been able to read between the lines from the other responses but the short answer is no.
not sure if you'd save money, but I know there's not enough difference to make it worthwhile.
with kiting;you get your lessons before you buy your gear (the instructors give you free hire gear)
and they will tell you which is the right type and size of board and kite for you
and it's best to know if you'll be a river and/or ocean kiter before you buy gear
Hey Shelf.
Good move ![]()
Its really not worth putting anything in the car when you bring it out here. I Imported a Midget couple of months ago and put a load of spares in it. Customs wanted to process them separately, rather than with the car, ended up paying more in processing fees than they were worth. It would have been cheeper to post them.
I also know someone that imported an Austin Healey, and he had a load of personal effects in the car. When it turned up they were all missing.
New kites are cheeper in the UK, but if you look around you will find places that will send them out postage paid, and will also sell it without the VAT for export, or bring them out with you.
HA HA !
YOU are importing a Landrover Discovery.
They are worth nothing here in WA.
WHY?
Yea, I was kinda wondering the same thing :-)
I mean I love tho look of them, but I sure wouldn't buy one with my own money. This may come as a shock to you but Jeremy Clarkson banging on about them being "the best four wheel drive on earth", brings howls of laughter from the Cruiser and Patrol owners who know a thing or two about 4x4. I personally am a lowerly Mitsubishi Triton owner.
As for the kites, as others have said, I wouldn't bother, there are many options over here and lots of bargains to be had.
Welcome to WA :-)

WHY?
Yeah true.
Not worth doing unless its a classic car. Anything later than 1989 and it is a PITA to get an import permit. Even if you do, you will then be up for a hole heap of import duty (unless its a classic car). Quarantine will have a field day with it if its been off road, and Dept of Transport will be a lot harder on you when you register if its later than 1989. (Prior to 89 it only has to comply with the safety regs and rules that were in force on the date it was made).
You will also have to wait 3-4 months for it to arrive.

Well I'll have a couple, looked at getting a swb recently, over $50,000 basic so not sure where your info comes from
bring your discovery over it will have to go over the pits but if its in decent nick you may get away with a few bits and bobs they can be fussy
dont put anything decent in the car it will get nicked my bmw got lots of goodies taken out of it including a BMW medical bag ( $5;00) the trouble is you have to give them the keys and between the crew on board and the dockers who knows who has been at it nobody knows anything and trying to prove who took it is imposs

That is exactly what I was getting at!
And Yes if you want to buy a new one , they are not cheap.
But as soon as the New Car warranty has run out , so does their resale value.
