Hey guys in 21 years old and ive been kiting for about 1 and a half seasons. I generally fly a 9m airush razor and i have a medium flying objects harness. The problem is that i get really bad back pain while kiting sometimes i don't get it all then sometimes ill get it after like 2 hours of kiting but then sometimes ill get it within 10 minutes of being out on the water and ill have to stop every 10 minutes to rest my back for 5. Im not sure if its something in doing wrong or my back is generally ****ed haha. Would just like to hear some opinions on my issue incase someone else had the same issue thanks ![]()
Sounds pretty bad and I strongly recommend you seek professional medical advice. I would start with a sports physio. They will do a basic posture/alignment check and look for obvious causes of your back pains, which could me a number of things really...there is no guarantee they will find the cause/solution and may refer you to other specialist for further examination.
I broke my spine when I was younger and this weakened my lower back. I made full recovery but still had a weaker back until I trained hard to strengthen it in the gym. Made all the difference and my back is now the strongest part of my body. In kitesurfing the back muscles are probably the most solicited and at the highest intensity as well, and therefore it should be the strongest.
But don't start training until you get checked out and find the cause of your pain.

Most of the time i have back pain I go for a kite and it fixes it.
PS. maybe your harness is not the correct fit for you?
PSS riding super powered is hard on the back/chest.
airush razor in pretty hardcore, could be the problem there!
flown plenty of kites the razor is defo not the problem unless ur on the 9m in 30knots
Also stretching is really good to relieve back pain (hip flexers, hamies, back) and dealifts are really good to strengthen your spinal erector muscles but form has to be perfect or u will do more harm than good and training core helps alot as well. The problem could also be attributed to the harness, might be better off on a seat harness if the problems persists. But as cbulota said get checked out first and then hit the gym hard over winter.
I use to wear a seat harness and the pain was still the same and I also use to fly a lithium and still had back pain. I'm going to talk to a sport physio get checked out properly thanks for all the help tho.
i fly razors and have flown a range of other kites, how old is your harness? i had to get rid of one as it was killing my back moved to something with more support and has completely removed any lingering pain.
try the Dr and maybe borrow a mates harness and see if that helps out.
Definitely see the physio and find out whats going on, shouldn't have that pain at your age.... at my age, that's a different story, after blowing my ribs with a waist harness due to tightening it too tight thinking I would get more support for my lower back pain, then a few years later again with a seat harness, desperation set in and now ride with the LF boardshort harness. Best thing I ever did, harness straps wrap around your butt rather than your lower back and the leg straps actually wrap around your legs than up your arse like a seat harness. The loading against the back is almost non existent with this style of harness. Due to the constant rib injury I no longer unhook and just cruise around like the old man that I am on the surfboard. I reckon if I got onto to this type of harness in the early days I would still be unhooking......and damn I miss unhooking...

i don't work at a desk im an refrigeration mechanic so am always in roof spaces ad continusly moving, and its mainly in my lower back just gets all tight when i start
Like plummet said kiting fixes my back too. When i unhook and crash still holding the bar i feel my back crack into place and it feels awesome afterwards.
I remember when I was learning my lower back got a bit sore and I realised it was my bad form. I suggest getting a mate to film you to see if you're kiting hunched over or with knees too bent. This puts pressure on your back.
If you focus on keeping your front leg and back in a straight line i reckon it would help.
In most sports, especially heavy lifting, incorrect form and posture are the main causes of pain and injuries.
