Im going to make this idea reality. But this year is screaming through real fast, and I feel I connot committ myself because of changes in my business at the moment. Next year would be a realistic goal to make it happen, but if someone out there wants to give it a go this year, then I will help where I can.

if you picked an event to piggy back on like kitestock? in WA , it could be worthwhile ? so not a financial burden on getting to an event, most kiters listen to gear reviews and then want to test the gear to make sure the product is suitable to their needs. selling the gear on the spot would be the desirable outcome for most shop owners but an incentive or discount for buying on the day may be the go . getting support from the manufactures is important and can only assist in getting it more popular.

I think running a kite expo would be a great idea - would be even better if it was organized timing wise that some of the internation team members from the manufactures could be there for it.

It depends, what you are aiming at with the expo.
Should it be "another" opportunity for kiters to test all the new gear or should it become "the testing event" that people remember and want attend again...
Yeah I agree, you are right wanting to make it end of the year, so you can present all the new gear.
On the other hand you wanna have a wide range of people coming.
I know the date is still far away, but as I heard there will be an PKRA tour stop in Australia 2010.
That's when many national and international riders would be there and may attract punters.
That's what PKRA wrote bout their spot choice:
"The venue will be the world–famous beach of the Australian Gold Coast – Queensland’s most famous stretch of 70-kilometer beach. This stunning piece of landscape is home to some of Gold Coast’s spectacular sporting events including the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. These significant contests consistently attract tens of thousands of spectators annually. The addition of the PKRA World Tour as a calendar mainstay of Gold Coast events further revitalizes the region’s foothold as Australia’s event capital as well as PKRA’s reputation as the world’s leading professional association of kiteboarders."
Dunno if its true, never been kiting there, but it might be cool to combine the events or at least use their spot (they probably made research on the spot search as well, then you don't have to do all the work
