Hi! I've already read several times online that the river in Augusta has changed and the spot isn't as awesome as it used to be this year. Is that true? Is it just more shallow?
The rivermouth was open near the picnic area last time I went so it's changing a lot. It's gonna be a lucky dip whether it's worth your trip or not so why not drive down caves road and enjoy the boranup forest on your way.
Yes it's not the same anymore after they opened up the western river mouth, also the beach is covered in weed and sharp sticks at the moment which makes launching and landing a pain , so you need to care.
yea there is no point on kiting augusta anymore. too much weed in the river and the bank has got too high so its super gusty.
Someone should educate the local bumpkins about how much kiting could have brought to thier struggling community if they dredged the old channel too.

Really?? A few kiters during summer which is their busy family holiday period I wouldn't think makes much difference. If anything, less kites probably makes it safer for most of their guests.
I think you overestimate how much kiters contribute to the economy.
Everything helps.
When you have an asset like that lagoon in harder economic times, surely it's worth exploring all opportunities.
With 17hr flights from Europe to Perth next year, it could be part of any promotion of mid-northern winter escapes to WA. They'd still buy wine at the cellar, eat at Margs, hire a car in Bunbury, ect.
WA locals still buy pies at the bakery, petrol at the servo, booze at the pub throughout the season. They help keep the place ticking over, and the more that keep going there the better the place is.
The local state member for the area has pics of kiters on that lagoon on his office wall as part of a series promoting the area. So hes well aware of the attraction but doubt the dots have been joined...
The local fishos would prefer the kites werent there anyway - scares the fish you see - now if the fishing dropped as a result of all the weed and algae there would be an outcry
