Headed there in July! Initially I was looking at surf breaks in the SW corner but it looks way windier in the NW from what the forecasts have said in the last week.
Any good advice? ![]()
Hey man...I'm in Kalpitiya at the moment. I have yet to discover epic wave spots here, just choppy shore breaks which sometimes can be fun, but there is definitely a lot of wind here!
I'm on a mission finding good wave spots so I'll keep you posted as I try to find some in the next few days!
Awesome, cheers! I'm wondering whether there's more swell the further south you go. But I guess once you get too far, there's not enough wind? Be interested to hear if you end up finding anything. :):)
Hey mate
up north is definatly wind, there is a reef there but waves are average at best
we went south waves were good but wind was light, 12m just, and only got a day or two
just not a wave place im afraid
Hi Guys..I am living in Sri Lanka and have a villa near Hikkaduwa. There is plenty of wind here and the usual Hikkaduwa 'A' Frames are working...at times pretty heavy. There is a lot of water moving around when its 25kts+ and wind is generally cross-on. I am not a kite surfer but avid wave sailor windsurfer (have spent a good amount of time in Maui etc) I use to have a brand on the South Coast Victoria that sold North and Nash kites so I have a good idea of the discipline. I am yet to unlock the area myself but am shipping in a quiver in August to explore. I have been home for the last 3 weeks and it has been pumping 18+ every day on the SW coast. It was like this all through the monsoon season last year also. My pad is on air BnB www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/skeleton?_set_bev_on_new_domain=1584708503_NTBhMWU3NzhiYTFh
and there is a link on our FB page Agwe Villa. I have a few Smik SUP's available here also that crew can use.
The biggest headache right now is all the West Side of the South coast is offering great wind and waves but there is no safety net....no real beach watch structure or marine emergency services. Right now today you would be the only one in the water on 99% of the breaks or beaches...there is a lot to do to change this and I am planning to uncover the real opportunities for wave kiting and windsurfing in the area...stay tuned and drop me a line if interested in opennning up comm's ... All the best Nick Moloney
Thanks for the info people.
Nick, can I please get your take on the windfinder forecasts here:?
www.windfinder.com/forecast/galle
Seems like windfinder is reading quite a lot lower than 18 knots for that stretch of coast. It's usually pretty accurate where I live but wondering if perhaps it's under-reading for Galle area or maybe is Hikkaduwa more exposed? I'm keen to look at coming to the SW but have only got 4 days so would quite like a decent chance of wind.
The biggest kite I'll be bringing is an 11m which really needs 14knots+ to be viable... I'm happy enough surfing if the wind is low but there's sometimes that frustrating 10-14 knots range where it's a bit too messy to paddle in but not quite enough to kite.
Cheers.
