I'm planning a trip to Fiji in Aug 2015 and have seen a couple of positive (if not slightly vague) forum comments about Nadula and Tavewa islands (part of the Yasawas) in Fiji.
I am looking for somewhere with flat water, a chilled out atmosphere and a good chance of wind. After seeing the forum comments, I had a look at wind stats for that area and on Google maps and it looks like it got a lot of potential for an epic 'off the beaten track' spot.
Has anyone been there? If you have, where’s good to stay and is there anything else that’s good to know; good launch areas, etc.
Cheers
Chris
Looks great. Never been there. Hope you can answer your own questions when you get back and post replies.
Hi Chris,
I 've been on 2 kiting trips to Fiji in the last 2 years during the same period you've looking at.
One at Sarfari Lodge - warren the owner is a member on this forum and I'm sure he can fill you in with all the details you are after. Kitepower Sydney & QLD also run trips to warrens.
I was lucky enough to have good wind the whole week and kited both in the bay on relatively flat water (for a bay) and trips out to an offshore reef which was amazing and kite back about 7 odd km to the lodge. All with boat support and staff well drilled in safely picking up you & your kite.
The other was with Moon Tours on Tevenuni. Again plenty of wind and kiting in a bay over shallow flats. I had a great time on both trips. Like all reef islands - the tide plays a big part of when and where you will be kiting each day. It's unavoidable that the kites end up with plenty of pin holes as everywhere is sharp - even sandy looking beaches - but nothing tape doesn't fix.
As far as somewhere budget minded to find wind in our off season - it's certainly worth serious consideration.
Tavewa is a goo flat water spot. A little tricky due to the tides depending on experience. Coral view is a good spot to stay, but you will have to walk over the island (15 mins) to get to the open beach good for kiting. Its a good party style resort to. Somewhere more chill is Fanny and Ottos place, on that beach at Tavewa. You can kite back to corral view, but if the wind drops its open ocean, and if you want to come in you have to Navigate boats and the bar roof! expect the wind to be 50/50. If its on its good for days, if its off, its off for days, but there is plenty to do in the Yasawas! Email me at fijikitesurf@gmail.com. Look out for www.designatedkitesurffiji.com. Not online yet, but I opening and running a small school/tour company on the coral coast this year. Epic waves and good flat water if you know where to look!
