I have been out of the water for 8 weeks with a bad ankle tear
physio reckons I can get back in the water in 3 weeks
i suggested strapless to him and he said maybe better strapped
I've just thought about boots
are they the answer ?
any one been down this road
and have any insight / advice into what worked for them
I am really keen to get back out there
cheers
Either or, if your physio is suggesting 3 weeks then he feels that its mechanicaly strong enough to commence kiting. However its probably what will give you more confidence is the real question. How did you injur yourself in the first instance?
Wasn't kiting just rolled it badly with my body weight coming down on it as it rolled ,coming down a step
it made a loud noise
one doc said it was broken
physio dis agreed and says its a tear
Im thinking tear as well

ummm maybe get a xray.....
Xray is needed possible avulsion fracture.
I have had numerous ankle fractures, the worst being an avulsion, the ligament comes away from the main bone.
Surgery fixed it no more ankle rolls in 10 years and long may it continue. I felt safer in boots but i worry about my knees when the feet are imobile. It takes time for the confidence to come back. If you have doubts about diagnosis get a proper examination and diagnosis. reinjury could be a lot worse if a fracture is missed or unstable.
There are boots and there are boots. I've seen many anckle injuries while in boots. Take care. A little time unstrapped will improve your general kiting and not risk further injury.
I have dodgy ankles, and after a solid looping sesh my angels start hurting in my boots so I think ok time to call it quits. The moment I take my boots off, I can't even walk. Boots just hold everything together.
I practice wakestyle 90% of the time, and crash harder then most, have caught plenty of edges and not had 1 injury from the boots.
Go for it mate, you won't look back
Yeah I got an x ray
doctors said he could see a fracture
but I think he made his mind up before looking at it
the physio reckons not a break , but a bad tear
I have more faith in the physio than the doc as its his field doc has to know a LiTTLE bit about every thing
so far physio instructions and predictions have been good
but the noise it made when it happened it could have partially released tendon from bone for sure ,bloody hurt that's for sure
Sounds like you need an ortho doc to confirm the original docs diagnosis. Did the hospital send you to the fracture clinic?
You can for sure hurt your ankles in boots there's just much less chance of it happening than in straps. I've hurt mine before on a bad crash where I flexed my ankle too far down to the board, mind you they are both already hammered from old skateboarding injuries.
Full ankle reconstruction in August last year, I ride boots full time now. Once your ankles have been damaged they are weak and will never be as strong as before a major injury the best thing you can do is protect them as much as possible ride boots for sure.
Don't quite agree, full recon 22 years ago with no break. Ruptured all 3 outside ligaments and crushed the inside. Haven't had a problem since my rehab.
Its all about a good surgeon, dedicated rehab and a bit of luck.
It's my other ankle now that's started giving me the sh!ts.
Boots kick arse over straps for dodgy ankles though.
Id definatly get an X-ray at a minimum but more preferably a ct scan to be on the safe side, fractured my ankle in January and the normal xray didn't show anything but the ct showed my broken talus.
What you said happened to you was what happened to me, rolled ankle and loud noise, trust me when I say do not muck around with this sort of injury, early diagnosis is the key and physios don't know **** about diagnosing fractures.
Search talus fracture and read all this miss diagnosises for yourself, should be enough to scare you to get a proper diagnosis from someone who can actually find out not just guess like the physio did.
Is it too late at 8 weeks out from injury to cat scan or will it show up still
i am also pissed at the treatment and being left not knowing exactly whats wrong i will look it up thanks for heads up i knew id find something useful in here
You may want to consider a Nuclear Medicine "Bone Scan". The bone scan can pick up detail related to fracture that an X ray will not see particularly in the early stages. The Bone Scan will show area of increased blood flow and heightened metabolic activity. I work in this area, so I've got a fair idea.
There is a lot of info on the web to help. Here is one example.http://www.insideradiology.com.au/pages/view.php?T_id=25&ref_info#.VS7c0kp--ig
I havent been out for a quite a number of weeks, went out last weekend and I got mega cramps in my feet after just 20 mins of kiting. Went out again after a rest and my feet were sore after just 10 mins. Now that winter is coming on and kiting sessions are going to get more sparse, this is going to become more of an issue.
Would boots help in my sitch? Or maybe warm up exercises?
If you do go with boots make sure you get ones that fit properly and don't make the mistake many novice binding riders make and do them up loosely. If you don't tighten them up fully you can catch and edge and your foot will slip half out and it can really f*** your ankle. I have a dodgy ankle as well and have been riding boots since 2006 and have not looked back. They are better in every single way to footstraps (unless you want to do board offs...) support and performance wise. I do agree with KIT33R though in that some strapless riding could be good as well. I ride either boots or strapless only and my ankles have improved ten fold. Good luck in your recovery.
Hey Iggy, not too sure if it will still show, mine was hard to see even at the start, i couldnt see anything but my Orthopaedic Surgeon could, id say its best to spend the money and get a specialists opinion
For the original question, i have been pondering the same thing and talking to a lot of different people and im thinking of going down the strapless path and hopefully that will help strengthen my ankle when i get back into it though ill have more insight come September - December (hardest thing at the moment is just getting into shoes, cant imagine trying to get my foot into wake boots anytime soon)
Phoney- I would suggest getting a physio to look at your feet as thats not normal, has it been a recurring problem or a previous injury?

It's a recurring problem at the beginning of every season, after a few sessions out the pain goes away and then I can kite for 1.5+ hours until they start getting sore.
No previous injury. I'm going to try do warm-ups stretching exercises before I go out this sunday...

i ride strapless or boots only,
ankle will get a shake strapless, i find that the response from the deck shakes the bone (and my plates) much much more than when riding in boots.
be careful and don't rush back in. re injuring will suck and take you out for longer.
I usually re-injure my ankles riding a wakeskate or a surfboard with kite. Even surfing I find it tough on my ankles. Skateboarding is the worst of all.
I usually re-injure my ankles rollerblading. Even boogie boarding I find it tough on my ankles.
Fixed that for you champ.
lol

Hardest problem with ankle injurys is getting you foot in the boot. I busted my ankle a while back and I still struggle to get it in with out pain.
Going through and actually doing all the rehab strengthening exercises recommended is probably the best thing regardless of choosing between strapped, unstrapped or boots. Have done my ankle through serious rolls 4 times over the past decade or so. The one time I decided it wasn't as bad as the previous one and skipped most of the rehab was the time it started aching during kiting sessions and ended up going again a few months later. I still just ride in straps and the only time I really have been concerned about the ankle was when one foot came out 10 feet in the air and I couldn't manage to kick the other foot out of the strap before I hit the water.
personally as a physio I would have referred you for an x-ray - it's good clinical practice post ankle injury depending on where your swelling was. The sensitivity of plain film xrays to pick up small fractures are not the best, MRI or CT is much more sensitive to pick up tibial plafond or talar dome fractures - the time frame still makes sense for a decent ankle sprain - 12 weeks, especially with surf based sport. We also know that when bone is immobilized / no weight bearing it takes ~ 6-8 weeks to heal, then you need to begin to load it again to finish of strong healing. Did you have a period of non weight bearing?Xray at this stage probably won't show up anything and if you have ongoing pain with it, i'd be chatting with your physio regarding MRI / CT.
