Hi everyone. Just wondering what other peoples injuries are with their ankles and feet and recovery times. Just started boosting on the weekend and came down a couple of times with only one foot in. As a result I've had a couple of days off and had been hardly able to walk on it for a couple of days. Lots of bruising and swelling.
Any ideas of how long similar injuries took to heal fully and be back on the water.
Cheers
Had an ankle injury same scenario in landing 5 years ago. When i walked my left foot was tending towards 90 degrees sideways .Still always kited ,2 weeks later went to doctors had X-ray,he said no break in bones. So i just lived with it and kept kiting.Probably took 6 months to recover properly with normal use in that period.Ligament /tendon joint damage always seems to take longer to heal than a bone break or fracture I.M.O
learn how to fall, believe it or not there is a technique for bailing out that crosses over through most board sports, don't tense up etc, learnt the hard way many years on big pipes & parks, put me in good stead these past years touch wood,
did two ligaments in my left ankle on NYE day after one foot coming out of the straps after a boost . Still hurts and can't push it too hard .
Yeah I've got the fall part down pat from snowboarding.
Just as the board goes one way and the foot thinks he wants to twist another way.
I rolled my right ankle when attempting to land a strapless air 6 months ago & its still giving me grief , so went to a good physio & got some exercises that are helping to strengthen it back up.
Makes me cringe when I see kiters on SB,s with just the front strap ![]()
only solution to ankle injuries is boots. Since riding boots i have never hurt my ankles. I had to start riding them a few years ago because i did the same, one foot out and bad sprain. Straps are just stupid, and cause too many injuries, the only downside to boots would be a big edge catch and a headache, other than that, injury prevention
one foot out on a boost hit sand and shattered heel bone over 14 pieces that's when doc stop counting no surgery on cruch for 8 mths and now 4 half years latter still hurts a lot but can still kite which makes it worst so 1 day flyer and 2 days off and then go again . learn to do superman and brake your arm or ribs but don't brake your heel bone it will stuff you up for the rest of your life .
sh!t man that one takes the cake. i recon im pretty paranoid about injuries, iv even started doing this 10 minute yoga routine thing that i found online every second day its just a shoulder one for now but i sneak in some knee stretches about once a week too. plus normal stretches before i go out, im 27 and i know all that injury sh!t is coming up soon. but yeh i cant believe how hardly anybody wears boots. they make you ride better and they save your ankles. ohh and they make you look like a sick cant
Dislocated my mid foot 6 months ago (Lisfranc dislocation). First two doctors said there was nothing wrong. Wasn't until I got to a fracture clinic that the specialist told me how serious it was and required a couple of screws in my foot.
Foot still sore and stiff hoping it will improve a bit more when the screws come out in a couple of months time.
Get your self checked out. Feet are complicated and you don't want a lingering or permanent injury.

Broke mine kitesurfing almost the same way but lost my board all together
Then hit the sand . Sounds like you did a way better job though!
I'm a person that can't sit still so I was in the pool waist deep walking back and forth as soon as I could then body boarding with one flipper on my good foot and heaps of laps in the pool . I was back on the kite 6 months later .
I feel for you mate it was one of the most painfull things I have been through .
bimalleolar fracture (those two bony bits that stick out either side of your ankle), with torn tendons and torn membrane that runs between the tibia and fibia as the twist / dislocation basically wedge the two bones a part, foot was dangly there completely sideways for a bit before it came back in place, some what.
Lucky it was at the end of season, took like 7 months and a heap of physio and then a slow ease back into kite boarding then tearing another tendon when I caught a toe side edge (most likely not enough strength back yet. so now I am riding boots for ankle support hopefully no more ankle **** ups!
lateral malleolus break, ankle dislocated because of the fibula trying to poke its ugly face out, some nerve and tendon damage from the dislocation, 2 surgeries, 4 casts ,and a metal plate with 10 screws for keeps.
3months off the water, heap of physio 7months on now, still relearning some foot control after 20hrs back on the water

boots R good but..... I rather have a foot injury than a knee injury, done both my feet in landing hard, done my left knee in by a wave riding boots.![]()

how would boots make you do a knee injury any more than straps? if anything you would be less likely as you cant lose one foot and twist your knee. otherwise, please tell me how boots would hurt your knees?
landing hard in boots or straps is gonna put the same amount of pressure on your knees. and yeh no chance of one foot coming out witch could injure more than just your ancle. yeh you do get pretty snapped sometimes when you catch an edge, but thats not really putting any pressure on your knees. but your safety leashes definitely dont last as long.
Thanks for the info guys.
Just want to say I'd prefer bindings over wake style boots anyway.
I've been wakeboarding a while and on big stacks your foot can still come out a bit. And that makes it twice as bad.
I'm thinking I should start stretching as well before and after each sesh.
look after your ankles, had an mri and i got virtually no cartilage left in my rear ankle - just crushed, fractures and tiny bits of bone everywhere. not really gonna get better cartilage doesn't really grow, painful as when rubbing. boots do support ankle when i wear them but also so many knee probs amongst boot riding friends - nature of riding i guess..
i would say kiteloops were to blame for the crushing - old fuels, real windy, landing with force of elephant... ah well.. been done, that's that..
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I was gonna leave it for a couple of weeks or so but it's gonna be windy on the weekend :D
Any clues for how to strap it well?
I did a jump earlier this year and impinged my ankle upon landing. Couldn't walk on it for a week, had to try and replicate what I had done to get the nerve to release. After that rehab the injury.
I kited for a month with one of those stretchy ankle braces on just for support. All good now!
Good luck
