Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me a good website to get a more accurate reading at alva beach please. Is there an aims site nearby? I have only been there a few times on my way up to Townsville and each time I have been the wind has been great when we stopped by for a look and luckily had our gear with us however most websites say it was only 5 knots when we were cranking around in 20+ all day. I spoke to one of the guys there..sorry mate forgot your name but like most kiteboarders he was friendly and happy to offer advice about his local and said that the weather station sometimes did not pick up any close reading to what the wind is actually blowing. Does anyone know how I go about getting onto a good site or any tricks the locals have to save me the drive ??
Cheers

Cheers for the link skid but im more after a forecast one rather then a reading. Though I suppose you could look what the forecast says for the day and compare it to the live stats off the bom one you sent to see what the patters are
Hi mattyj, General Rule of thumb for the place for me is , any reading with south in it means the wind will be stronger on the water than what the obs are saying, cause of the location of the wind meter.
Easterly winds will be close to what the obs are saying probably about 90 % percent true , example if the obs are reading 15 -20 it will be true around 13 -18 .
Any wind from the n/e (dead on) is about 60 - 70 % true.
When the wind blows in summer from the NW (straight down the beach ) the wind on the water will be stronger than the obs, great fun on the run out tide. You can be standing at the treeline and not feel it, then walk to the waters edge and get blown away ![]()
Also in winter/spring the wind fills in on the run in tide in the arvos . Anyway like i said this is my spin on the spot.
and if you wanna be sure pm the day before and i can give you a heads up , today will be our 6th day in a row. ![]()
Thats the kinda info I was after! I seem to remember the bloke I spoke to that day saying certain wind directions give inaccurate readings cause of the location of the wind metre. In trade wind season what is the predominant wind direction ??
Sth east early ,East predominately and as the day comes to a close, it will tend to have a bit of south in it, exactly like the high we have over us now, this winter has seen a lot more south in the wind for some reason and the main lagoon has seen some early arvos rides marginally cross off.
Generally as the high passess over and we come into the back end of the high, the last couple of days of wind, it will tend out the back in the wave zone to be nor east and as you ride closer to shore it swings a bit more east.
