Hmmm, making a sport appealing retarded? Not sure I understand that one. If it wasn't appealing you'd still be using crap gear & only have two different kite companies to choose from.

Actually you wouldn't be kiting at all would you?

I found that a really entertaining video! Never seen the seagull before, guess I was only 12 back in the day when this all first started.
I am however slightly concerned for Toby that he might be the love child of this man?!

I see the point you are trying to make if we all were kite companies or shops, but really, is it up to all of us to make the sport appealing?

I couldnt give a toss if joe public likes my kiting or not and personally would prefer if every man and his dog didnt take it up

If every day kiters are concerned with entertaining the public or making the sport appealing, well thats plain retarded

Hope this helps

Is that really the reason somesone does 'old school' stuff? To draw a crowd? Because it looks more impressive? Come on - a little vain isn't it?

Actually i generally kite with my bro, one or two others and thats it. Rarely people on the beach. And I love chucking in the old school stuff, part of the dog styler (mask, 2013) approach. I enjoy the fluidity, timing and gracefullness of it. Sure if I was 25, yeh I reckon I'd be putting more freetyle wakestyle stuff in (I did dabble a little earlier on) but my knees and ankles can't handle it. Got a family to worry about now.

But I do enjoy watching a decent wakestyle dude, going hard and I have enough experience to understand what they are doing and highly respect what they are doing!

But to say old school is only for looks, well I disagree. But I'm sure there are those that are show ponies doing either of both styles. I got no problems with that either!

Toby wouldnt have put so much time and effort if his entire focus was to be a show pony. He obviously loves his style and promotes it. Good on him.

Quite honestly I find most (not all) surfing vids on a kite as boring as bat sh1t, rather watch kelly slater do it properly to be quite honest.

Each to their own, hey.

Well said eppo

I've always been a big fan of the old school - mostly on a landboard/snowboard until last season when i returned from Europe (brace for the euro bashing)
Since being back in Perth the only land-boarding i get to do is on my own in a park
No spectators in fact if people turn up i generally pack up as generally joe public doesn't know the dangers associated with kites

I guess i'm saying that I - like most kiters that i've met kite because they enjoy it . . .
it does make me feel good if another kiter acknowledges something i've done but that's the same with any sport

To say that old school is the reason we have problems with joe public is just moronic - old-school tricks esp when going big look just the same 200m+ from the shore . . . its the new-school stuff that's easier to miss and if someone was a show pony they would pull these closer to the shore

respect to red bull for bringing back the old-school comps

If I was a spectator of the sport I'd prefer to watch someone like Ruben than any of the handle pass jockeys. But variety is the spice of life. Each to their own, do what you live to do.

There's no doubt that Toby has created a dvd with alot more variety than the repatitous handle pass jockeys, imagine an hour watching handlepass dangles! It is entertaining, in it's own way.
