Almost definitely taking the family to Portugal next June. Thinking about staying near Faro. One website says the prevailing wind will be a northerly and another website says the wind will be cross onshore. Surely They can't both be true with Faro's positioning on the south coast. Can someone who's been clear this up for me. And any tips on taking the family to Portugal would be greatly appreciated.

Portugese custard tarts are to die for!! There just little bite size ones, get them early in the morning when there still a little warm

Actually the food in Portugal in general is really good, I had really good bbq chicken and seafood stews. I just went to sagres area for about a week, it was windy but I wasn't kiting back then, it's an awesome place and really interesting, really good waves

Hi psychojoe,

Portugal is amazing, been there 4 times and definitely will go back next summer. I would avoid Faro area, not consistent wind, rather stay in Lisbon area where you can kite and visit the city. Or Viana do Castelo, great conditions!

I agree, the food and wine in Portugal is incredible. For great consistent wind and waves Guincho is pretty good. It's about an hour and a bit from Lisboa. We stayed on the coast in Estoril and it was only 15 minutes to the kite beach. The area is stunning and the old Moor castle and World heritage listed Sintra is a must do. Amazing history. Oh, and did I mention the food and wine? ;) I can't wait to hit up Portugal again. Porto is also another great city with loads of art and history (and the birth of Port wine) and has some good kiting near by. Can't go wrong with Portugal and people are friendly.

I went to Algarve last last year for about 6 days. There were maybe 2 kiteable days during that time. I didn't take any gear with me so I bit the bullet and shelled out 80 euros or something at Alvor to kite in the river mouth for a couple of hours there with the school. There were also some kiters on the sea facing beach but the wind was offshore there. We stayed at Lagos.

While in Lisbon I went out to the beach near Cascais one day, Guincho. Nice beach, good waves, maybe 18kt wind and a few kites up. It was a 33C day and I thought "That's funny, other than the surfers there's nobody in the water past their ankles". Then I jumped in and realised why. It was about 14C!!!

As for Portuguese food, it's decent but 90% of the restaurants have the same 10 things on the menu. We ate well but had to do a bit of research and planning to avoid eating the same thing every day.

Ive heard good things about the Madeira islands but never been. Part of Portugal but its more off the coast of Morocco.

And does anyone have an opinion about Esposende.
I pretty much want to get a big air b&b house on the coast with a kite beach out front and I don't being being away from town to get it, if anyone has any good ideas on towns where I can get this
