Hey everyone,
Here is a recap from an adventure to the Whitsunday Islands towards the end of last year on board Le Cochon Noir. We spent the days travelling the Islands kiting, windsurfing, SUPing and documenting the trip for the Seamonsters Kite, Wind and Sup magazines, which are now available as of this week.
Special thanks to Roman and his family for taking us onboard his beautiful boat. going to have to disagree with your ending comment there with the whitehaven being a world class site for kiteing. probably lived on the island for if added up id say 100 days (national parks will know exact figure as every nights $5) allways with my kiteing gear. the winds no where near consistant enough to be remotely considered a world class site. or even and average spot. its beutiful as **** but the conditions simply arent there. and if you dont have a boat you have to walk an hour from the campsite to the rivermouth. and it IS an hour of walking. and quite often an hour of walking back. between that big mountain near south end and the very dense tree line covering the whole stretch of beach its certaintly not clean wind for launching/landing. again its a lovely spot and my favourite but theres just as nice sites around like hydeaway bay witch are far easier access wise and several others in the whit i wont even tell friends about. anyways back to whitehaven, the sandflys during large parts of the year are SO BAD the tourists that get dropped off on the island last MINUTES before they run screaming and bleeding into the water to wait for there guides who have ducked well off the coast to return and pick them up. also theres plenty of conservation nutters out theyre who would be quick to blame kites for scareing wildlife etc (ignoreing the thousands of people frog marched onto the beach for an hour every day) anyways just felt like i should point some of these things out. if the wind was even KIND OF consistant i would be running kite tours there i a heartbeat but its soooooo **** its just not feasable not even for a once a month fully pre booked sorta deal.
Nice video, When out on a boat on a low/no wind day I have often wondered whether parasailing with a kite would actually work, but never tried it. Whitsundays look amazing, especially with your drone footage.
Yea, I agree that access is by no means easy, i guess that is part of the adventure. We were lucky enough to have access via a boat which was either a short 5 minute walk to whitehaven or a tender ride around the point away. I guess the claim as a "world class location", was because when we were there, we scored. We aren't by any means trying to tell everyone to go to this place because it's the greatest on earth, more just sharing an experience of going on an trip, taking a risk, doing it a little differently and ending up scoring what at the time were amazing conditions and bloody awesome times all round!
