Aircon, cheap, clean enough and friendly people.
Walk to beach. One dollar taxi to Kuta.
Been there twice and loved it both times.
Get a bus at the airport to kuta
When in kuta wonder about for a bit
Jump into the nearest and best looking hotel.
Alternativly buy a lonley planet Bali book.
Read said book on way to Bali
Decide which hotel you want to stay at
when arrive at airport ask bus driver to take you to place you liked in book

Try the Barong, central and affordable price. I Have always managed to get a room when I've rocked up without booking ahead.
Or go online try this website http://wotif.net.au/?country=ID You will definately find a hotel. I've booked hotels at half rate because they would rather get some money instead of have it empty.
