Hey all,
ive just decided im going to take up kite boarding having no previous experience.
I Live in Warrnambool (South West Vic) and the winds can get very wild this is obviously a no brainer in when its really windy i dont go out till i get some experience. or get a kite thats as big as my hand!
Does anyone know of any Shops or Clubs in the area that do Lessons? or can point me in the right direction.
i was thinking of going to Geelong or melbourne but a 3 hour drive to have the lesson cancelled due to not enough/too much wind would be a bummer.
or if theres such a thing as a bootcamp style training holiday?
Cheers
Andy
Hi, just go to the beach when people are kiting and suss them out. They are pretty cool crew down that way. Also if no one goes out prob try Port Fairy that is a heap better spot than Warrnambool they maybe all there.
thanks,
Whats everyones thoughts on Training Kites?
places like kitepower suggest i hire or buy one and get some time on it before going into a lesson. all of the other trainers dont suggest doing anything like this.
whats everyones thoughts and suggestions.
Cheers
Andrew.
a trainer is a good idea if you have never flown a kite before, and fun for friends who want to have a go (but you dont want them to axe your real kite)
another good idea is to do a search, this has been done to death, there are also articles about starting out - see the right hand side of the page. you could also do a search with the key word warrnambool and there is a crew down there and they have occasionally posted on here
Trainers are a great idea to start.. and they also help with getting mates into the sport, I havent seen my trainer kite in months as it gets passed around that much.
And sleek1 is right just stop us on the beach, Im a local and with the SEasterlys back (for now) we should be out most arvo's @ Bool bay, Killarney or Port.
Cheers

hi get your self an 2m-2.5m ozone imp, trainer kite.and use it till you get conferdint with it, on the beach at a park some where away from other beach and park users, and power lines !!
when you can fly the kite well eg. not crashing all the time.then go and book in a 2 hour lesson ,most kiting lessons start with 20-30 min with a trainer,so if you allready can fly one well! you get more time on the water with a real power kite.
Kitepower is close, and they might have an instructor that travels to Port Fairy from time to time .
And fly the trainer like you would your big kite.
Ie:
1. 2 O'clock, lie on your back, Left leg forward
2. Dive to 10 O'clock, power on, pulls you up on your legs
3. Practise moving it through the power zone, lean back to take the pull - keep your ankles, hips and shoulders in the same plane (no poo stance)
4. Practise going from 9 or 3 O'clock to 12, jump.
5. Practise looping it (maybe when you get better)
Same safety precautions: make sure downwind is clear, you have a safety flagging line to depower the trainer, etc
Plus some sturdy footwear for your ankles and friction burn protective clothing.
And maybe a radio helmet for your instructor to talk to you (very important kit)[}:)][}:)][}:)]
