It could be a good idea to start with a seat harness rather than a waist harness.
Not the most flattering but definitely provides better support through the body dragging stage and early board stages when you're still learning to edge and deal with the power.

Many people will probably try to talk you into a waist harness straight away.

No particular brand is best: different designs will suit different body shapes better. Try on as many as possible and go for what is most comfortable - disregard cost if possible: the cheapest may in fact suit you better, or scrape together the extra dollars if you feel the most expensive actually fits you best.

All the best, you'll love the sport.

Just been through this helping my gf get started. At first she got a waste harness which is great but after lessons she wanted to wear an impact vest as well and couldnt find any that were small enough to go together with the harness. This was because the vests went down too far over the harness.

Solution ended up being an integrated vest with harness, found one made by Naish which works really well and was pretty cheap as it was run out stock. If she doesnt want to wear the vest then she just goes with the North styler waist harness we got originally.

Hope that helps.

Ditto to all above,
My experience- seat harness's are best to learn with to avoid boob bruise and I dont think there is any real reason to change to waist later unless you want to.
I just had a month using a mates North Styler, my first experience with a waisty, and it was very comfortable straight away.
BTW my first harness was/is an old model seat harness bought very cheap second hand and still does a great job- get whatever fits you well and looks in good condition, over any specific brand or gender.

Yep. Save the extreme boob lift for your sixties. Get a seat harness to start with.

I started with a dakine women's seat, and then got a dakine women's waist - I think the wahine...and now I have a mens North waist harness which is like getting a hug from a really agreeable lounge suite.

Good luck.

Hi Becstar,

I ain't a lady but I can give you some tips here if I may

There are some wise words from Jess in there. Ladies harnesses depend hugely upon your particular body shape and size.

A seat harness will be more comfortable for the first few weeks/months depending on your progress, but they will hold you back and will definately induce extremely poor style and posture, known affectionately as "poo stance", yes it is unflattering!

A good waist harness will make it all easier and more comfy one you can ride confidently back and forth. There are a number of ladies harnesses on the market and it is worth trying on several until you find something that fits really comfortably.

We have the Flying Objects "Sapphire" which is a little dated in design but was sworn by many of the ladies as the best in it's day. It's cheap at $110 We also have the Pat Love "Eve" which by all accounts is amazing and very comfortable. At $245 it aint cheap but you do get what you pay for so long as it fits your curves.

You are better to try and find a good quality womens harness than a mens harness as they are made for different body shapes ..... think about it!

There is also the DaKine Wahine.

Good luck and hope you find something that fits well and is comfy, it makes kiting much more fun if you aren't in pain all the while.

Good winds,

Hi becstar,

When i first started kiting, all those many years ago, i also started with a seat harness but i only used it for about 2months and then went to a waist harness. I found the seat extremely uncomfortable and preferred a waist harness.
It's best to really try on as many as possible. I didn't like the feel of the dakine wahine waist, i found the hip sections to small.
I figured out pretty fast that a xsmall mens harness's are the way for me.

Now i ride with xsmall north styler for the past 3 seasons and find it very nice. A few of the girls where i live have also found the same.

But best to try many on as everyone is different.

Thanks everyone, all your information was very helpful. Michel has kindly let me try a couple of her harnesses.

Just need the right wind 30 knots is not ideal, for a beginner I think.
