Hi QLD kiters,

I'm going to be staying on the Gold Coast for a month from next week. Is there a FB group for kiters in that area? I'm interested in wave spots. Unfortunately will have to work 8-4 but keen to find kite buddies for the arvos or weekends.

Cheers
Ezza

Yes, there is a FB page for the GC it's called "Gold Coast Kite Club". Just turn up where you see some Kiters out Ezza and I'm sure you will find most GC Kiters are a pretty hospitable bunch. Main Beach as breakzy sais is a pretty good area to start and for beachbreak wave action. It's generally best on SSE through to N winds (E and ESE winds are no good as direct onshore for there and its difficult to get out of the shore dump zone and S winds are slightly cross offshore which gets wind turbulence effected from the highrises). Just be mindful there are a lot of Clubby Flag Areas in close proximity and it pays to have good upwind ability to stay away from them, which can be tricky when there are times of huge shoreline sweep moving in a Northward direction. Downwinders can be fun, just have to wide birth the Flag Areas by heading right out the back and around them as I am sure you would be aware. Some of the locals are quite guarded as to Kiters going through or ending up in the flag areas as can be expected and try to keep a system of self regulation happening. Other Surf locations to check out would be Currumbin on winds from SE through to N and Kirra on winds from W through N through to E.

Thanks LostinSpace :)
Couldn't find the FB page. I went for a kite somewhere on main beach by myself, a couple of weeks ago, on a southerly. It was pretty SSW tho and a ****ty flaky breeze.. There were a bunch of kiters south of the flags, so I thought I might be in the wrong spot... then one washed through the flags and I realised they were touros. I'd be keen to try Currumbin or Kirra... yewww
