Having just been to Hatteras I have to say those locals there have it pretty good. Flat water for those that do, and surf on the other side for those that like that. I was there a week and kited every day bar one day. I could have kited that day too but was a bit run down. The surf rarely gets big, but you can do epic downwinders in cross cross off conditions, 25 miles is not uncommon. But as far as kiting through those grassy bits they can be super fun as well. I would go back there and plan to next year when my wife heads over for her next tour.
As far as dad and son duo, good for them. Sure he is marketing his gear, but if I had a son I would be stoked if he wanted to surf and kite with me. I have two daughters and one surfs, but none want to kite. And my daughter does not want to surf what I like to surf.

Good video which actually shows what's going on with the kite rather that a person dangling under it.

Maybe i will have kids. Always have someone to kite with :)
