I am the downwind Kiter in the pic you are referring to and yes I think the zoom lens has compressed the picture a bit .
But I had no issue with Marty jumping that close. We have kited together for at least 6 years. I trust Marty not to do anything stupid. There are other very experienced and skilled kiter in the area I would not get within two line lengths of because I know there vision is not so good, and there regard for other is low (one happens to run a kite school).
So i suppose it comes down to knowing the other kiters in the area and avoiding those you don't trust by staying up wind of them or staying well down wind of them
