Hi everyone,

I have a 2014 North Vegas 14m which dosnt seem to hold its shape soon as the wind picks up a bit, turns into a massive jellyfish and wont steer properly, even when pumped up hard. What I wanted to know was is this what all 2014 Vegas are like or would it just be mine? Or even just because its a 14? I have a mate that wants to buy a 12m 2014 Vegas but is not real sure as he know what mine is like. So anyone elses opinion on the 2014 Vegas in either 9m or 12 in the upper wind range would be much appreciated.

What kind of wind are you talking about? Could be one of a few things...

1. You need to tune your lines and your 5th isn't tight enough

2. You're taking a 14m in winds it really isn't meant to be used in

3. You have one of the 2014 Vegas that gets a warped canopy. They had a problem with getting "misshapen" due to a difference in stretch between the two sides of the canopy. A few brands have had this over the years and I know some North team that had problems with their kites going wonky after some use.

... G'day Wallis,

my son has the 2014 14m Vegas and it's fine, then started doing weird things too until we re-tuned his bar. I suspect you have a problem with either of 2 things, either the 5th line is short and pulling the nose of the kite down or the front lines in general are longer than the steering, causing a slight over sheeting as the wind picks up.

Check the front lines from the Y point, making sure all 3 above the Y point are the same. Usually, the 5th line is short (or the fronts) are longer than the 5th line so put in an extension, trim it and make sure its perfect. Next is check the overall tuning of the bar making sure the steering aren't too short.

Give it a go and let us know how ya go!

I had exactly the same problem on another kite that was only a year old also. When using it on it's upper wind range and up, it was jellyfishing like crazy and the only way to help this was to overinflate the kite like crazy (above 10 PSI). Even then, it was still jellyfishing a bit when overpowered.

The only logical explanation is that with an extended use the Leading edge dacron gets weaker and the kite starts to bend more easily. I guess it's open for debate, but trying another of the same kite, same size, same year...again in the same conditions was absolutely not jellyfishing at all, and it had a lot less usage than the one that's jellyfishing...

I had the problem cbulota describes with a 12m 2012 Vegas, got soft and powerless. But with various sizes 2013 and 2014 I did not have these issues at all. So more likely to be what Drury and others suggested above, most likely bar/lines not in tune, or way overpowered use, or just a lemon which every brand produces from time to time.

I was using the same bar and lines on both kites, one was Jellyfishing like crazy and the other one not at all, the only difference between both kites was about a 100 days less of use on the kite that was going fine.

That is what I mean and what perhaps Drury refers to in 3. Becoming soft and feeling like 2 sizes smaller power-wise. Some kites are still going strong but some for some reason feel like end of life at that stage already after one saison. Hence I call it a lemon. Not sure how such phenomen is possible but like I said I have seen this only on the older Vegas not on the newer ones (might just not have reached the critical number of sessions yet).

Thanks for the replies. Im thinking I got one of the dodgey ones as within a few months it had 2 bulges on the leading edge from one layer of stitching popping open and 2 areas on the canopy have stitching coming undone where the panels join. I used to pump it to 7psi until the bulges started now I go to 6 which is what it recommends. Also im talking about 17 or so knots it starts losing steering and shape and if I steer it too hard it folds. My bar works perfectly on all my other vegases. I now have a 2015 12m that I can take out up to around 25k and holds it shape perfectly, awesome kite.

My EVO had simular issues and the problem was what Puetz explained. After research, I found that each size EVO had a different size nose line.
Mine was slightly too small (or shrank). Just enough to create a very slight vee in the LE, visable only from somebody else observing.
Loading the 5th line, on a non-loaded 5th kite had a big effect on the the flight.
Spose itll cost you nothing to check your bar and lines (and nose line) before writing the kite off.
Good luck
