Since December 2011 WAKSA members have been patiently waiting for the second running of THE event of the season - and here it is once again....WAKSA is very proud to announce to our members that the 2011 Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Kite Surfing Race is happening once again on Saturday 3rd December 2011.
Are you ready for the longest open ocean kite race in Australia (possibly the world?)
Last year, Alex Caizergues won the inaugural Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton race covering the 19 kilometers between Rottnest and Leighton beach in just over 24 minutes.
This year, Rob Douglas the world speed sailing record holder (103.06km/hr) has confirmed he is racing also, making competition on December 3rd all that more exciting.
For 2011, the number of participating kiters has doubled with 100 kiters taking to the waters between Rottnest and Leighton beach.
A number of places have been allocated to international kiters, as well as the first ten place getters from 2010; sponsors and supporters of the 2010 race leaving 65 places to be filled by WAKSA (or AKSA) members for this iconic event. Those 65 names will be drawn from a hat at Kite Addiction on Wednesday 26th October at 6.00pm.
The 2011 Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Kite Surfing Race will also provide sensational cash prizes - 1st $1500; 2nd $750; 3rd $375; 4th and 5th $250; 6th - 10th $150 each. The first female competitor to finish will win $500 and Red Bull trophies will be presented to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 1st female.
For just a gold coin donation, interested friends and families will be able to watch all the action from the middle of the course onboard a specially chartered Rottnest Express ferry.
Funds raised will go to WAKSA's favourite charity - Redkite. Check out www.redkite.org.au to find out about the great work Redkite does.
The state government, through Eventscorp is proud to announce its sponsorship for the Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Race for the next three years. We are very excited to inform members that through this sponsorship, a 30 minute TV programme on the 2011 event will be broadcast.
The 2011 Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Kite Surfing Race is proudly supported by WAKSA. Once again, WAKSA recognises the effort that WAKSA member Tim Turner has undertaken to develop the event.
WAKSA also acknowledges the event sponsors - Cabrinha; Kite Addiction; and Rottnest Express and Yellow Jersey Stategies. The race couldn't happen without the 'on water' support from Royal Life Saving Society WA and we also recognise the special assistance provided by Fremantle Ports and the Harbour Master.
Registrations and entries for the 2011 Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Kite Surfing Race commence at 12.00pm on Saturday 8th October 2011. Go to www.lighthouse2leighton.com.au for more details.

Does anybody still have a copy of the official results of last year ?
Can't remember if I got a top 10 spot (officially) because of the amount of people not crossing the line properly .
In the hat anyway .
Thanks Slack
Looks like I am a starter
Better start sorting a board now rather than leaving till the last week like last time .
No more guessing as to what to use , we all have a rough idea as to what does and doesn't work .
Good luck with the draw Phil , hopefully see you at the start .
No excuses Pat , last year I was very lucky but I can't expect to be lucky every time . Did feel that I hadn't made the best choice in board though .
I've got my spot thanks to the guys at Red Bull. Anyone know of places to stay near the finishing point?
no response from WAKSA when trying to register!?
Does rego go through Red Bull? used to work for them so maybe they give us some wings to fly over and race.
is there price money?
any of the top guys (Heineken, Sky, Koch..) coming?
Hi Marvin, not sure what email address you are "contacting WAKSA" with, but you can always try us at our usual address, waksa@waksa.org.au - it's the same one we've had for oh...years.
The registration website has got all the prize money information in the world - go to www.lighthouse2leighton.com.au and then go to the "About the Race" page...and you can find out about the 'top guys' - Alex Caizergues & Rob Douglas who are coming for the event...
Hope this helps and we look forward to your emails.
best wishes....
Thanks for putting in all the work waksa. should be a awesome day!
hey.. how does that surfboard and leg rope combo go? come firing back at you??
Green boardies and a leggie, what was I thinking. ![]()
I knew someone would have a go about the leg rope, I didn't think too many were aware of the green boardies thing.
For the record I don't use the leg rope unless I am at a location where there is strong current or a sharp shallow reef inside the break (that location has both). and I wouldn't dream of wearing one on a TT.
Now can people stop quoting that post and let this topic get back to the L2L. ![]()
