Gday all, im 178cm tall, and 85kgs. Newbie, not quite going up wind yet. I don't want to get a big board only to trade it in a few months, but at the same time I don't want to get one that will be to hard to master. This one looks like a good one but not sure on the size. What do you think??

Hi Dave,

Board sizing also has a lot do with the average wind speed in your area, or essentially how powered you're going to be. I could be wrong but I believe you get a lot of light/moderate wind days in SA ? Also, if you're gonna kite mostly in open ocean with chop in sub 20 knots winds, then a larger board would make a big difference, but if you kite in shallow waters or flat waters mostly, then a smaller board would do the trick even in sub 20 knots.

So at 85kg, if kiting in open ocean when most days are sub 20 knots, I'd say go bigger.

Hi.

I'm 85 to 90 kg and ride a 138cm TT as my regular board. My lightwind TT is a 170x50 flydoor, id say your 135 might be on the smaller side for a guy your size. Ok when it's windy but won't be much fun in winds under 15 knots unless you have massive kites.

135 sounds ok. It will take some practice to master it in lighter winds but it will serve you well. I am 75kgs and for some time I only had a 127cm board. Now I can ride it in 15knots to 27knots with one kite. But I did make myself a 150cm x 50cm board for easier riding and a directional board for choppy days with swell.

So you should be ok with that one but a light wind board is a worthwhile investment as well. Making one is even better and satisfying.
