Anyone tried it?
I have a JP 8ft 2in x 32in with windsurf attachment point so thought I might add foil to it.
Got sail boom etc and SS school foil so can start cheap.
What are the thoughts?
A bit more on the above.
My motivation to try on a SUP converted is 2 fold ie cheap as got gear, plus in my area a lot of trees and power lines restrict access with my kite in winter westerlies.
I am up and going on foiling with kite but very early days plus foiled behind a boat. So why not windsurf foil?
I'd have thought a kite foil profile wouldn't give enough lift. You have way more drag to overcome on a SUP board to get the water flow over the foils to give you the lift and a much short power spike pumping the sail to build up that speed. Can you fit the Slingshot windsurf front foil to your mast/strut? Getting hold of one of those should give you that low speed lift.
Assuming you move the position of the foil under your feet rather than sticking it at the back of the board like a windsurf board it could be fine. As always, the home built solution is often more difficult to learn on that a production tested solution.
Yes I think centre of lift position and sufficient lift might be an issue with a standard kite foil. Zeeko is making a reasonably affordable windsurf foil tag looks good.
SS Website has boards a bit like my JP pro SUP but the SS are much heavier.
SS state their Hover Glide foil is suitable and from my assessment the school foil would have a little more lift.
I currently have a modified North Nugget for kite foiling with the SS school foil and have the Alien Air
The Nugget is way easier for learning to kite foil.
I am happy to experiment but keen for others experience first.
Manta foils have a convertible SUP/wind foil so your idea is fine.
Looks like another seabreezer has done some of the prior effort first: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/WindFoil-flight-schoolRoo-style?page=1
Looking a bit more into the windfoil from slingshot, it seems that maybe the big difference is that you can change where the strut mounts onto the mast so you can reuse the fin box. As you are doing a bespoke board, you wont need this as you can start off with the optimum mount position.
I wasn't aware there was a different foil for the schools. I assumed it was just different mast lengths. Looks like you are good to go.
Admin,
I rarely look at the winsurfing forum but due to continuing poor weather here I did.
Guess what they are into foiling as well.
So could Admin move my post to Windsurfing forum.
Thanks
