hey mate,

the north 59' and Sector 60 will be good for you.
You might be able to find a good price on 2nd hand one.

good on you for setting such a goal!

I was just talking to marvin about Jr dev programs and if a kid is 12-16 years old now, they are in an ideal position to have a real shot at making the olympic team.

if you are serious about it you will need a serious race board - i don't think a free race will cut it. but saying that if a free race is all you can afford now then its better than nothing.

good luck!

As you can see here 14 year old Olly Bridge is using the 2011 69cm wide North Race, so it seems there is no racing advantage in going smaller than 70 cm other than maybe cost.
The newest 70 cm boards are reportedly easier to ride than previous models, so learning on a smaller race board would be more difficult but you then have a higher skill level and switching to the 70 cm board shouldn't be difficult.

Sheeting with one hand while steering with the other means you can keep the ideal stance without having to bend to sheet out, so you can hold more power and not unbalance the board, so you could adapt your bar for that and that would be a large part of the skill you would need. You can See Adam Koch doing that in this video.

You need to be able to make all those adjustments without thinking so you can concentrate on what your opponents are doing and check the wind angles and buoy positions for deciding when to tack.

JayP is right Andy.
Be great to have a schmick new state of the art board - and Im sure you will have soon enough. But for where ur at now anything will get the job done for you.
Once you start showing promise - potential sponsors will take your gear into account if its below par - the right gear will not be far away.
Go For It.

Will the Olympic gear be one design? Probably best to train with anything close to get good and then adept to 'the board' that will be used. As puppet says those that are any good will get sponsored, any board to get used to tacking/VMG etc.

The Sector 60 is worth checking out. It is heaps cheaper than all of the full race boards, very easy to ride but still fast enough to compete with the full race boards and you can start learning a lot of the technique required to race on the full race boards.

Personally i think most people will be better off starting on something like the Sector 60 and learning how to RACE before they start learning to squeeze out another 1 maybe 2 knots of board speed.

If you do decide to go for the full race board i wouldn't bother wasting your money on anything older than 2011.

Completely agree.

If going used S60, look for V1.5 onwards though..

Sector 60 is a great board and easy to learn to ride and tack and gybe,
Other then that you'd have to get yourself a newer 3 fin style race board which only really came out this year and are still pretty expensive even second hand.
Main thing is your learning on a race directional with decent fins and pointing, plus the gybing and Tacking is what you need to get down smooth and fast at these will cross over onto the bigger high teach boards when your ready for them..
