here is the official protest decision from Nationals.

And here was the course.
This info is collected from my Garmin GPS with a land based mapping program, not a race specific program.
If I have done everything correct with my GPS surprisingly the first race took only 12min and travelled 4.33km.
In the second race the wind was dying and after I crossed the start I actually lossed ground and had to duck behind the start on the return tack.
I also stuffed up my tack at the top buoy and driffted down wind to far and had to have another crack at getting around.
In the second race I cover an extra 2km due to the wind dying and not making my way upwind as good.
The officials measured the wind at about 9knots on the course.
By the track profile it looks like the my average upwind speed was about 15 ![]()
Duno if this is good or bad as had no one else to compare with and it's my first race on the North race board and new 17m kite ![]()
Your downwind runs and pointing were very good too. In light conditions I find this harder than upwind. It is where the good guys win their races. Impressive.
Here is a tip - for the future of the sport- get rid of the protest process.
Can you really afford to have races cancelled due to less than optimal organisation ?
Professional Windsurfing races used to use protests and they just bogged everything down. Racers would be arguing with each other over 13th and 14th place due to starboard infringements while the wind would slowly die as the fleet waited on the decision.
At the Olympic level in the past there was a lot of lying and game playing going on through protests / false witnesses. - it was part of the game - the italians were particularly effective at rorting the system- much like their football team in the 2006 world cup- its an awful culture to have in any sport.
Perhaps a simplified set of rules could work - but run at speed from yachting style protests and rules. You need to rely on honour amongst sailors- and build this culture into the sport.
I'm sure organisation perfection will come with just a bit more experience - but to have the races chucked in the bin is simply tragic.
The bar for organising & racing at the 2012 kite nationals rose about 500% in 1 day with the yachting Australia officals at the comp. Everyone racing/ admin at end of racing series had learned alot about the new era of kite racing. Protests are about making it fair for all racers and take way the practice of making up rules on the day. The 2 x race's abondoned in series were a result of -
( As per sailing rules) "3. A significant number of competitors were disadvantaged due to the lack of an 8am briefing, lack of appropriate official notices and signals to inform them of the 10am start time and were unable to make the starting area in time for both races 1 & 2."
Nothing tragic here " just comon sense". Winning because of a bit of luck on day has gone out the door.
( As per sailing rules) Protests are lodged up to 1/2 hour after last race of day - so no holding up the fleet in races here. Lodged - Verb: 1.Present (a complaint, appeal, claim, etc.) formally to the proper authorities: "he lodged an appeal".
If you want to race at professional organised events in the future you MUST know - the sailing rules, stay 100% informed as race start info changes during day, rig correctly and race within these rules and you will never get a protest. Every one of the 25 racer's at 2012 Nationals "LOVED" the new racing rules & development of sport with yachting Australia.
P.S The best part of the whole event was the vibe amongst the racing crew, very friendly, lots of sharing notes on equiment & riding tech, and all were 100% serious about racing hard & winning race's. We all saw the latest 2012 race boards, kites and racing set-ups and learned heaps. ![]()
